Buy X10 or something else?
« on: August 01, 2005, 08:29:38 PM »

I want to buy a home security system and
don't mind paying a reasonable amount for
quality. Does X10 have a quality product in
this area and what is best? Is there a
better product from a different company
that would be better and if so who?
Ultimately I want motion sensors and
cameras surrounding the perimeter that
calls me when activated and allows viewing
through camera(s) activated via internet to
establish if false alarm. I also want to
place a motion sensor as far away as 500
foot up my driveway. Possible with X10?
Thanks for input. I have been robbed
recently and want to sleep soundly again.

Well, as in most things, you get what you pay
for. I recently moved and setup an x10 system
in my house, for the time being. Im having th
house quoted by ADT, Brinks and Sonitrol.

They are more expensive plus theres
installation costs and monitoring is around
$30 / mo. ... But I'm strongly considering it
for a coule of reasons:

1. A wired system is more reliable. The x10
modules, in my experience, have operated
flawlessly. I have a small home and the base
is centrally located, so it is ideal.

But everyone I talk to says that its not too
hard to defeat the wireless systems. And when
it counts you want it to work i guess.

2. Having the system be monitored is costly
but there are distinct advantages. Their
response time will be much better than yours
will be. They can dispatch immediately if
there is a fire, saving time. They are
immediately alerted if there is a failure in
the sensors, which could indicate a problem

3. I dont think the x10 motion sensors are
pet-immune... which is problematic for pet owners

Abou the distanc eissue, I think they make
repeaters for x10 but not sure if that will
work with the motion sensors...

Well Keith, I just got rid of my ADY sustem
and its wireless but its a false sense of
security. I have 3 floodlights with cams
hooked to a VCR and works great for me. The
low light cams are useless in the dark. The
home security with X10 trips so my lamps
start flashing, powerhorn goes off, siren
goes off and it makes the phone call tomy
cell and the two neighbours . The problem I
see with X10 is they should spend more time
on setups and helping people such as this
forum but the forum could be set up a lot
better.
