"Back in the day" when I was writing software
we had guidelines, standards, procedures,
policies, and more. I don't know what
happened when the PC appeared. Suddenly we
had "coders" fresh out of university with no
training or knowledge of usability issues and
ergonomics believing they were interface
designers and developers. Suddenly, this
thing called Windows appeared and it had no
rules, nothing was consistent, and help
messages for numeric input fields contained,
"Enter a number." as if we're such MORONS
that we didn't know that already. In those
days, classroom education was required before
one was allowed access to interface-related
code.
