Version of AHP designed to run from computer 24/7
« on: March 24, 2005, 09:45:28 PM »

I would like to see a version of AHP that
strickly runs from a PC.  Think about the
capabilities.  I myself control my lights
strickly from the remote controls (palmpad,
sticka switches, motion sensors and the PC)
which means that all house codes can be
monitored, tons of logic can be added (not
constrained by the small amount of memory
in the CM15). The X10 stuff is supposed to
be an inexpensive means of automating
things.  But after you add up all the
software, modules, phase coupler/repeaters
and filters needed to make the system work
properly you've spent a considerable amount
of money.  With the price of PC's being so
cheap I think it would be worth the cost
for the added benifits and features it
would bring.

Tcassio:  There are many third party
applications which are designed with the
idea of having a computer running 24/7.
Almost all of them support the CM11a and I
am sure most of them will eventually add
support for the CM15a.

For this application, the CM11a may be just
as good as the CM15a.  It has four
advantages over the older CM11a:
1. Improved capabilities when disconnected
from the PC
2. Built in whole house RF transceiver.
3. Built in RF transmitter.
3. USB interface.
The first is obviously irrelevant if the
computer is running 24/7.  For the second,
since the computer may not be in the
optimal location for a transceiver, a
separate RF transceiver might be
advantageous.  With regards to the third,
if you need an RF transmitter, you can add
a CM17a or a CM19a.  As for the USB
interface, it really isn’t much of an
advantage in this instance.

You should be able to pick up a used CM11a
fairly cheaply and you can use the CM15a as
a whole house transceiver if you want.

For those of us who don’t want the computer
connected and running 24/7, the CM15a
promises to provide many advantages over
the CM11a.

Roger H,
Can you list some of the programs that have
these capabilities.
Thanks,

I don't understand I've been running my
CM15A on AHP connected to the pc 24/7
without any problems. You'll need modules,
phase coupler/repeaters  and filters  to
make any system work. There are some free
addon programs made with the SDK for AHP one
very good one is X10Dispatch

tuicemen,
I have all the stuff you mentioned.  The
system works.(with the erception of all the
quirks that need to be fixed.)  However,
being limited to 8K of memory in the CM15A
there are things that can't be done.  If
everything was run from the PC, the
possibilities are endless.

Thanks,
Tony

Everything doesn't have to be downloaded
into memory to work! thus the option to
download or not in the timers and macro
setups. Granted flags have to be used from
the interface but you can get around using
them if your connected 24/7 There are some
great programs out there for the cm11a as
Roger H. suggested. Many of those will some
day support the cm15a but they can be
expensive.
