I'm planning to write my own software for my X-10 system, not because there isn’t any good software out there but because I think it's very fun coding. I have not bought any X-10 products yet, but I’m planning to do that soon. I saw a movie about X-10 on msdn.microsoft.com/coding4fun the person in this move said that only the CM11a can be used for writing your own software. The other computer modules hasn’t been broken yet.
The starter kit I have intended to by includes an ActiveHome Interface CM11 - IH3010. Can I use this as the same way as a CM11a? I'm thinking about using C# (.NET 2.0) for my project. I would be more than thankful for some comments about this. I don’t want to buy something I can’t use the way I intended to.

I have now found out the difference between CM11 and CM11A. A stands for America, correct me if I’m wrong. I live in Sweden and I suppose that the CM11 works the same way as the America model when it comes to coding for it? Can anyone confirm this?

Yes the A in CM11A stands for North America and runs on 120V 60Hz power.  The CM11E (for Europe) uses 240V 50Hz power.  Since the clock is dependent on the AC frequency, you need to make sure you get the correct model.
