[Either I'm missing something or all the rest of you are. But, this idea seemed so obvious to me from the first day that Dave_x10_L brought it up that I cannot understand why no one else has suggested it...]

  • 1.) Get a Yahoo! ID with the same ID that you use here (i.e. TakeTheActive).
    - Got to www.Yahoo.com and sign up. It's *FREE*!
    - If you already have a Yahoo! account, but with a different ID, create a new one (to avoid confusion as to who's who). It's *FREE*!
    - If your ID is already taken, ADD A NUMBER to the end and try again (i.e. TakeTheActive1).
    - If the NUMBER idea is *TOTALLY* repulsive to you, ADD '_X10' to the end and try again (i.e. TakeTheActive_X10).
    .
  • 2.) Install Yahoo! Messenger.
    - Back on www.Yahoo.com, on the right-hand side, under "Hi, UserID", CLICK on  ;D Messenger.
    - On the next screen, CLICK on Get it now.
    - Yada, Yada, Yada... In Step 2 of 6, CLICK on Custom Install.
    - For a minimal install, CLEAR *ALL* the checkboxes except Desktop shortcut.
    .
  • 3.) Launch Yahoo! Messenger.
    - Sign In, Yada, Yada, Yada... CLICK on: Messenger -> Yahoo! Chat -> Join a Room... -> Computers & Internet -> Electronics:X
(Where 'X' is usually the HIGHEST Number with the LEAST non-X10 Members).
    - You can CHAT in: Text, Voice or Voice Plus Video (Webcam).
    - POST a message, IN THIS THREAD, announcing that you're Available / Looking For Help In TTA's "Community" Chat *AND* what Timezone you're in.
    - UPDATE the YIM field in your Profile with your new Yahoo! Messenger ID. This will display your YIM Status on the Who's Online screen.
    - SEND an E-Mail from *YOUR* new Yahoo! account to someone who has successfully used the Chat Room so that we can verify that you *DO* have access. [Currently, TakeTheActive, Puck, KDR and tjdavj.]
    .
  • 4.) After a few days, we'll review this post and make any necessary adjustments.
    - Once a few of us play around with it, we should have a better understanding of it's capabilities.
    - As I understand it now, once it's running, you can do other things and IF/WHEN someone wants to CHAT, a POPUP will appear in your Systray.

See you there!
:)

TTA  this sounds like a good idea. I'll give it a try this weekend.

KDR

Sounds like a good idea and I will get an account setup this weekend as well. (Watching blue paint dry is more fun then watching yellow paint.)

Puck, JimC and KDR:

Since you fellows are, IMO, technically more proficient than a majority of the "Community", I would like to ask you to 'Take Notes' as you follow my instructions in Post #1 and then report back in this thread with any "Potential Pitfalls" that you discover.

Puck and I spent some time last night getting him setup, so I'd imagine *WITHOUT* a Buddy handy to coach you through it via Instant Messaging, some NEWBIEs might get "stuck".

Thanks! :)

TakeTheActive

To Whom It May Concern:

*PLEASE* comply with Step #1 in Post #1.

    - If the NUMBER idea is *TOTALLY* repulsive to you, ADD '_X10' to the end and try again (i.e. TakeTheActive_X10).

This is *NOT* meant to come across as an attempt to be difficult or confrontational - I politely asked everyone joining TTA's CHAT to use a certain Yahoo! ID as a "Standard", and for future use as a "Sorting Tool" if/when the list of TTA's CHAT Members grows to ( let's say, > 20) more than can be displayed on the related Yahoo! Messenger screen without scrolling.

Yahoo! IDs are *FREE*, so, you can have as many as you want, with *WHATEVER* names you want. But, for this application, *PLEASE* use your X10 "Community" ID. If it's already taken, try adding a number to the end (as per the original instructions, re-posted above).  If you *REALLY* detest the number suffix, then try "_X10" at the end. As a VOLUNTEER, you want a NEWBIE to be able to find your Yahoo! Messenger ID as easily (and confusion-free) as possible - don't they already have enough problems? ;)

"X10" at the beginning is *REALLY* not a good idea - it creates TWO lists (TakeTheActive-style *AND* X10TakeTheActive-style). In programming, many of us prefix a valid fieldname with a lowercase z in order to get it to sort to the bottom (and, temporarily out of the way). Hopefully, everyone will understand my point and I won't have to harp on this... ;)

Thanks in advance to EVERYONE for their cooperation! :)
