Proximity Detector?
« on: May 11, 2008, 11:41:53 PM »

I live in an apartment building, and would like to hook something up that will turn my lights on when my car pulls into the parking lot.  Is there a module that I could put in my car that would trigger a home automation system once it came into range?

If you...

1) get a motion sensor
2) park near the entrance of the garage

See this link http://www.x10.com/automation/tm751_s.html and this one http://www.x10.com/automation/ms16a_s.html

You can use a motion sensor as "Insert Nick Here" suggests. The only problem with this is that every time wild life  strolls by the motion sensor will trip.  You also state that you park in a parking lot so a motion sensor might be problematic.

If you don't mind pushing a button when you pull in you could get a "key chain" or  "Credit card" remote (available on the X10 site). Depending on the distance from your car to the apartment you may need some other devices to extend the range of either of these two devices.
