Home Theater Fundamentals

The following suggestions may be obvious to some but not necessarily to all.

In addition to having a high quality large screen television display, you will want to experience the full enjoyment of Dolby Digital 5.1, or higher, sound. You will want to connect the audio and video outputs from your satellite receiver and DVD player to a high quality A/V receiver. The receiver will decode the audio into the full range of audio channels available from your signal source. Further, the receiver will allow control of the audio levels and response characteristics. In some cases, receivers support the addition of special audio processing, allowing you to apply special kinds of ambience. Although not necessarily part of the original sound, these effects are considered advantageous by some listeners.

You will want to consider Dolby Digital 5.1 a basic necessity, as virtually all present day movies offer this capability. For exciting sound, you need excellence of power, frequency response, and freedom from distortion. These features are delivered by quality receivers. From various web sites, devoted to home theater systems, you can learn which receivers are the good ones, how well they perform, what they cost, and where to get them. With appropriate study, you will be able to choose wisely.

It is essential that audio output from a well chosen receiver be distributed to a high quality system of loudspeakers. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your point of view, loudspeaker technology is a complex, technical, and demanding subject. Choosing loudspeakers intelligently requires considerable research and substantial insight into what makes good loudspeakers good. Since you will require six or more loudspeakers (subwoofer included), the investment can rise to substantial proportions. But, the rewards are also substantial.

Once you experience the magnificence of high resolution video images, accompanied by the amazing audio typical of today's sources, you will never want to turn back.

If you already have a high quality home theater system, you are to be congratulated. If you don't, then an exciting and rewarding element of your entertainment future lies ahead, waiting for you.
