AHP won't talk to my CM15A

Hi members, and viewers,

            EDITED : 12/3/07  6:00PM             Boy do I feel silly  -- and relieved.  Operator error was to blame -- I couldn't READ.  I downloaded the ActiveHome software and was sure that I had the ActiveHome Pro software.   Thanks Tuicemen for colorfully linking me to my error!     ;D

I received my package 4 days ago and have been very frustrated so far. :-

  • I downloaded the AHP software from the website, and it seemed to install fine - I accepted all the defaults and it seemed to play just fine.
  • I set up the CM15A after several false starts, and it now is properly detected and the USB controler is installed and uninstalled when the device is added or removed from the cable.
Sucess here, so it seems. ;D

They won't communicate to each other  :(

The AHP software defaults to com2. Several posts I've found say it requires com1Currently when I open the preferences, all com options are greyed out -- (I've reinstalled this several times on both Win 98 and WinXP and have seen com1 ungreyed and all ungreyed - go figure--)  Likewise in the Tools/Com Test dialog, I've seen different combinations currently com2,3,4 respond "not a valid choice" So com1 it is.
It still isn't talking.   ???


researching com1 / USB I don't really find much - a few ref's that USB will default to com1 (lowest unused), another ref or two that there's a com to USB icon in the system device / ports listing that should be directed to the correct com port - I don't see that in either XP or Win98 ??

Any Ideas?

I entered a help request at Cust service.  It basically has what is given here, (minus the WinXP refernces and the com port info)  and that I was using a computer system : AMD 2800+(1.3Gig), Asus K8N, 500MB ram, AGP video, USB-2   good but nothing special.

Their response was a stellar:   Did you download AHP from the website, or an e-mail link? :o ??? ::)

So, I know that Tuicemen, and the other heros and almost any other person out here can provide better ideas than that!
Please -- bring-em on

I'm currently using XP (nonSP1) so no USB2.0, that shouldn't matter.  suggestions on Win98SE are good - that's what I'll be using in the end.

Active Home Pro does not use com ports. It comes with the CM15A USB interface.  If the interface you have uses a com port, you bought the RCA branded CM11A and Active Home.

I would contact X10 Customer Support for a RMA and get Active Home Pro.

I infer from your post that you have XP on your computer.  There are known cases of PC's with certain motherboards have com port communication problems.

I purchased  the CM15A from X-10.com, and downloaded the AHP software from the download page.

First instaled under Win98 with the noted problems.  Reinstalled under XP.  I haven't yet swapped drives back to Win98... probably will this evening.

Stop!
If you can avoid putting AHP on windows 98 don't! You will never be happy running it on 98 unless you never plan on using any of the plug-ins!
I beta tested every plug-in except the last ON Alert and every one had and still does have issues with that OS.

Now your first post was a little confusing as Dan noted X10 Put out software for the CM11A called "ActiveHome" the software for the CM15A is "ActiveHome Pro" you must becareful when searching and asking for advice as the answers you get will differ and just confuse the issue even more! :(

Sounds like you downloaded the wrong software as AHP has no options for com ports unless you have a different version number than me.
What version are you running?
If you downloaded from here   you have the wrong software!
You need to fill out a Secure Download Request Form to get ActiveHome Pro and wait for the link to arrive in your e-mail!
The AHP software you have to get from a link supplied to you from customer service unless they changed that as well!(been a while since I got mine) ;) :D ;D

This is the CM11A kit carefull there is a pic of the ActiveHome Pro in the top pic enclosed in a box!
If you have the older Active Home software and  the CM11A and chose to stick with it you can get more info here or from the ActiveHome Section on the board!

Thanks for illustrating the obvious - as I couldnt see it.  Rather I saw what I expected and not what was there....  I saw the PRO even though it wasn't there. 
Hopefully the link they sent me downloads the Pro version - After uninstalling the Non-Pro version.

That probably explains why the link only downloaded what looked like just the smartMacros portion.

So, my version is currently 0.0.0   I'd say it's different than yours!


  Tuicemen - Not being real familiar with chatting - how do I use the tag-line at the bottom of your post?
  I get to that help request page - are we just trying to get a perm chat room on their list or is this a per session request?

0.0.0?  Is that the version for a deleted item?

Active Home's latest version is 1.42, Active Home Pro's is 3.204.  Smart Macros does not change the AHP version, only the On Alert plug in gives AHP a version of 3.206.

Active Home had zero plug-ins.

If  your AHP is giving a version of 0.0.0, it sounds like a totally bothed installtion.

It's OK

As I said in the last post -- I was seeing what I "expected to see"  -- active Home "PRO"  on the download page.
       (some of us are talented tha way)

As you are all aware - "Pro" isn't on that  page -- It's only available from the e-mal link - which I didn't have, as it went to my work address over our holiday shut-down.

I had indeed downloaded the regular Active Home as you said. :-[   (0.0.0 would be a non-existant AHP version)  :D

I think this particular thread is a dead one -- I'll now uninstall AH, and download AHP from my e-mail and start over.

One other thing.

If you created any .x10 files by Active Home, keep them.  When you get Active Home Pro and the CM15A, it will import those .x10 files and convert them to .ahx files.

When I updated to AHP, I had been runniing Active Home on Win9x with no problems. I updated to WinXP and discoved the com port problem, so I ordered AHP. I've always done the backup of my created files, both in Active Home and Active Home Pro. It's saved crashes and any thing weird. When I replaced my video card, AHP went nuts and locked up, so I deleted everythihg, did a full edit of the Registry to elininate anything X10 and re-installed AHP. Copied all the .ahx files from the backup folder to the AHP folder and everything came back as before.

We are trying to get a perminant chat room for Home Automation. We usualy use the hightest Electronics chat room# but we get a lot of unrelated requests there!
Once you have Yahoo Chat installed thats where you'll find someone untill  if a HomeAutomation room is setup for us
Click on feedback, sign in, then request the room "Home Automation"  in the form that displays!
