Could someone explian how the StyleSwitch works? Except for a red LED it does nothing.

What is a  Style Switch?

Are you thinking of the SS13A Stick A Switch?
http://www.x10.com/automation/x10_ss13a.htm

It is a RF device that sends commands like other X10 remotes to a transceiver.
TM751 and RR501. Controllers like a CM15A or Security Console.

The transceiver converts the RF commands to a power line signal. That controls X10 modules on the addresses it is set to.
Pushing a button on it will not do anything except flash the RED LED, if its RF signal is not received by a transceiver and sent to a properly addressed module over the power lines.

Give us the correct name, the crystal ball isn't working. Are you asking about the X10 Pro "Decora style",  "slave"  switch in a 3-way circuit, which does have a non functioning LED?

If so, it is the second switch in a X10 3-way lighting circuit. You can not use a standard 3-way switch for the second switch, nor will the XPSS slave switch function in a circuit without the master XPD3 (incandescent bulb only-dimable) or XPS3 (flourescent, LED, etc. - non dimable).

Gee. I love it when we fix something and don't know what we fixed.  ;)
