Currently have a single light switch controlling a single lamp (normal stairway setup). I would like to find an X10 solution to control the single lamp from two switches (known as a three-way setup). The existing wiring does not allow for a three-way hard wired solution (I don't want to rip the walls apart).

Hints or ideas on what the best product mix I should use???

Start by using an X10 controllable switch in the existing light socket.

Then if there is a place where you can put another switch (somewhere at the opposite end of the stairs) you can install an ICON switch with no load and set it's address to the same as the main light's switch. (Just connect the Line & Neutral wires and cap off the Load wire). ICON switches transmit X10 signals on the power lines when activated manually, and this will give you a 3-way set up without being physically wired together. For looks, I'd suggest making both switches ICON.

Another possibility is an X10 stick on RF remote switch at the other end of the stairs and have a Transceiver to receive and send the signal to the main switch.

The ICON switch sounds like the solution - but what exactly is the ICON switch and/or where can you get them??

I have listed two links, one for a dimmer switch and one for a relay (on/off) switch. Both will work; but if you want to dim the light of course use the dimmer style.

ICON switch is a good one, but if you find you do not have a second box available for the ICON switch, replace the a standard switch with a X10 wall switch (i.e. WS467) and use a "Stick-A-Switch" in any location you want. You would then need a TM751, or RR501, or CM15A (the "Active Home Pro" controller) to pick up the RF signal of the SAS and convert it to PLC.
