What Junk this stuff is !
« on: May 23, 2005, 12:12:03 PM »

Now I know what I got for such a good deal,
a plastic box with a cute little antenna on
it and has serial number UR-A-SUCKER on it.
Chalk this one up to experience, should
have listened to the folks on the forums.
Should a never listened to the folks trying
save face for the bad purchase by debugging
the product for X10.

Darn, my serial number is the same!

Cruel Technology Gods playing with us mere
mortals?

Best thing to remember Mouch, you paid for
entertainment / learning.  Lot's of good
learning on what to do to make X10 in home
automation work.  Pretty cheap
entertainment.  When I tire of the learning
I'm going to install something else (no
names here) and frame my CM15A and hang it
on the wall.

I really couldn't disagree more.  I've
worked a lot with other vendors and I was
quite surprised with the level of quality
and professionalism I received from X10.
I really wasn't expecting anything from X10,
but for the price I figured I couldn't go
wrong.  The stuff that showed up really
amazed me.  I installed the wall receptacles
and they really do look quite professional.
When I went to turn everything on, however,
nothing worked.  This was where X10 really
got good.  They troubleshot with me for a
good long while (probably cost them as much
as they made from me in sales) until they
discovered that my AC power
conditioner/filter was bleeding garbage onto
the power circuit that was interfering with
the X10 system.  I used a different circuit
and it worked like a charm.
The other area where X10 really amazed me
was in this forum.  I posted a simple query
asking if anybody had done integration with
a remote control and someone immediately
shot back suggesting the IR-RF transceiver I
needed.  Not only did it work like a charm,
but it was only ~$20 instead of ~$500 for a
similar product for Lutron's Graphic Eye;
Lutron's RadioRA doesn't even offer a
solution.
Even discounting the ludicrously low price,
I'm amazed by X10's current offerings.  They
work (at least for me) perfectly, they
integrate very easily with other
components/systems, and the support is
better than I've seen with any other
vendor.  Kudos to you, X10

Drop the AHP software and the CM15A out of
your assessment amp; I think most would agree
with what you say here David S.   I read
somewhere on these forums that some have
had simple problems like software
registration go on for many moons, that
does not speak well of the support if they
cannot even get that right.   But alas, I
do know nothing is perfect.

Anyone living with intermittant problems
with the CM15A (RF problems or otherwise),
ask the X10 techs to send you one of the
newer ones that has diagnostic
capabilities.  They fixed a ton of problems
with it and I hear they are or will start
shipping this unit when new customers buy
one.   At the very least, X10 owes you a
better unit, they knew the old one was in
deep trouble.   The swap is freeeeeeeeeeeee.

Dump the CM15A and AHP software, buy a real
system, buy SmartHome's products.

We need to start a forum for spouses to
voice issues with our husbands working
their butts off trying to make this product
work.   I want my spouse back, I want the
house lighting automated, my friends have
husbands that spent a few extra bucks and
installed a better system.   I'm listening
to some of the forum chatter and agree with
some, it's time to move onto a product that
works.   Hope you read this Hubby!

Just an FYI here, I changed the user names on
a bunch of posts here because they were all
from the same person. We don't mind
criticism, but we think it's important when
sharing information that other people who
read these forums be able to know who's
posting what.

David, I completely agree with you. I have
been using X10 products for a long time and
am very pleased with them. I have the CM15A
with all of the plug-ins. I have one of the
newer units and with a few exceptions it is
running flawlessly.

If I was as unhappy as the individual with
the identity crises I would simply go
elsewhere.

David S,
Bravo, I do agree.. X10 has lots of faith in
us to continue an open forum like this.  I am
impressed !  My CM15A seems to work pretty
well too and I also had a few startup
problems with noise.  I had an old computer
(WinME) that I use for a second e-mail
machine that created lots of noise even when
turned off.  The power supply has no external
OFF switch so the only way to eliminate the
problem (without a filter) was to physically
unplug it.  The opnly other problem I had was
traversing electrical phases.  That was
solved by installing a passive filter across
the 220v inside panel.  Everything else seems
to be working pretty well.
regards,
SteveRF
