Replacement for lost door sensor pick up
« on: May 01, 2007, 03:42:26 PM »

Hi,
When I moved I somehow misplaced the other half of the door sensor pickup (if that is the right term). I'm wondering if there is a fix for this short of buying new units altogether?

Door/window sensor
Model DS10A

thank you for any help

Did you lose the active part (with the wires) or the passive part (with the magnet)?

Door/Window Sensor: Model DS10A

Any other magnet that will cause the active (reed switch) part to 'click' (close contacts) will work just fine. Aesthetics, though, are another story. You can (in estimated order of increasing cost):

  • 1.) Grab a 'bare' magnet out of your JunkBox and 'scotch tape' / 'silicone glue' / 'HOT glue' it opposite the reed switch.

  • 2.) Visit your local RadioShack / Home Depot / Lowes and buy:
     - a Home Security Magnet (don't recall if you can buy it without the reed switch), although the size will probably be bigger than the X10
     - a General Purpose Magnet, and return to Step 1.

  • 3.) Visit your local Home Security Alarm Installer and buy:
     - a Home Security Magnet (don't recall if you can buy it without the reed switch), but s/he might have a better variety of sizes.

  • 4.) Online - Smarthome: 3/4-Inch Magnetic Contacts, Normally Closed , but, be aware of the STEEP Shipping Charges for Minimum Orders. [Thanks Dave_x10_L and Puck :) ]

Compliments of Puck (and the ADVANCED SEARCH):

Anyone find a cheap place to buy these switches and wire online in order to group windows/doors?

This forum is clearly one of the best things that X10 has ever done.
Now if they would just have someone frequent the site for feedback...
