Hello All,
My name is Rob Gilliam and I just purchased a couple of X10 packages to attempt to create a front porch/yard Halloween scare display.  I am totally new to the X10 experience and seem to be getting hooked.  I really don't have much time to get too involved in setting up a whole-house system, so I'm starting off slowly in hopes to get the feel for how these contraptions work and maybe I'll expand later on.
I'm from Bowlling Green, KY (Home of the Corvette/Caddy XLR, FOTL underwear, Holley Carb and other fine businesses. . . not bad for population 50K) and am a full-time firefighter/EMT.  I specialize in Aircraft rescue.  I'm also an Army Reservist (former tank commander, drill sgt.) now teaching Military Science and Rappelling for the ROTC program @ WKU.  Prior to joining the fire dept., I worked for many years at a motorcycle dealership and started my own internet business where I design and fabricate sportbike accessories (www.minusonefender.com) I hope the web plug is okay for forum discussion.
I also am married with two kids (1 and 4) so you can probably see where my time goes.
Hopefully I'll be posting more as I get deeper into my Halloween creation as well as future projects, etc.  Just wanted to give a little intro and give a "thanks in advance" to all the people on this forum who are smarter than I.  I'm sure we'll talk soon
Nice to meet y'all!
Rob G.

Welcome aboard Rob. I think you will find that you will get hooked on using X10 and will want to expand. Once you get setup let us know how your halloween setup went and what you had X10 doing.

Welcome Rob !
I've got to say, this is the first time that I've EVER heard a DI say ANYONE WAS SMARTER than he is.  ???

It's got to be the kids.  ;D

Since I've gone to the ROTC mission, I've really had to switch gears and tone it down a bit.  Don't let it leave this room, though! (I've got a rep to protect). :)

As a way of thanking everyone for all the helpful and interesting posts, [and a big nudge from TTA], I will introduce myself.

They call me TJ and I have been involved in electronics for as long as I can remember. First, as a Musician/Pro Audio designer/engineer for 20 yrs., then the computer bug bit me in 1985, and I have been a computer developer/consultant/hardware design specialist ever since.

I am a born and bred Oregonian, (near Eugene), and the grey winters are starting to get to me..

I have been a tinkerer/re-designer for as long as I can remember.

Obviously, I have dabbled in X-10 many times (I have enough products to cover 2-3 homes) but was never really satisfied with the performance of the products. (Have they ever field tested anything before releasing it?)

I am currently interested in broadband video, ie: video over IP, for many uses, including security and video conferencing and have tested a few products pertaining to this field.

I have posted a preliminary review of the Sentinel Security system here:
http://www.x10community.com/forums/index.php?topic=10700.0

Once again, thanks for all the help and feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Hey here is a shameless plug for my newest entry in the X10 video contest at you tube.

I already won the $500 of free X10 stuff once (with my DoorCam video)... not sure I am allowed to win again. But I am sure (at least one of) you guys could put together a better video. My latest video is called "Hummingbird"

I haven't NUDGEd anyone in about a week and consequently, no one has INTRODUCEd themselves in about a week - should I:

  • RESUME my "gentle" NUDGing?
    .
  • GIVE UP?

Plus there has been at least one introduction. medvampire has introduced himself in the topic he started: Access control for kids computer and TV

Your Nudging lives on.  ;)
P.S. I'm still having a problem with this link with a name thing... If it doesn't appear right, please fix it.  :-

[TTA Edit: I used BRACES instead of BRACKETS in my original instructions because the SMF Forum Software would have CHOKED on BRACKETS *WITHOUT* the proper parameters. ;) Just CLICK on MODIFY for this post and you'll see how to do it!]

[TTA Edit: The ALTERED link: Hummingbird ;) ]

Since I have *NO* X10 cameras or software for them, exactly *HOW* do you capture something like this?!? ???

Do the cameras record 24x7 to the PC's hard disk? If so, how much space does it consume? ???

NEAT little movie! :)

I just set up the wireless cam on the deck and the receiver at the DVD recorder in the living room. I recorded for a couple hours, then stopped the recorder and reviewed the DVD to make sure I had "bird footage".

Then put the DVD in the PC and edited using "windows movie maker" (free).

I do use other DVD maker software. Like when I make DVD's of the grandkids from my home video. But for good and fast compression, Mr Gates created a fair package.

I feel that it would come across better if the Nudging came from multiple members instead of just one (me!). With just me constantly pushing all my new ideas (getting NEWBIEs to Introduce themselves; getting OLDTIMERs to write articles; etc...), it looks like I'm trying to jam "my way or the highway" down everyone's throats - and that is *NOT* my intention at all.

As I stated earlier today here - at the bottom, if my actions are generating LOADS of complaints being sent to x10javier, then I had better "step back and just watch" for a while. Maybe I have been too obsessive lately.

Sure, when I see a NEWBIE with less than an hour total logged on the forums stating:

"I just bought AHP - it doesn't work - does anyone have any ideas?"
I'm "champing at the bit" to jump in there with my boilerplate MAP / MEASURE / CORRECT response. But, I've been told that, although the advice is sound, the presentation is a bit harsh.

So, I'm going to take a break, read the new messages, post an answer if I know it, and wait for the "Unhelpful" Feedback PMs to arrive... ;)
