I need a solution to turn off speakers remotely but not entire stereo

I'm curious if anyone knows how I can use x10 to turn off some speakers in my house remotely without turning off the entire stereo.  I have an existing surround sound system which has speakers in my bathroom ceilings and throughout my house.  I'm looking for some type of low level switch in which I could intercept the speaker wires and dedicate one x10 remote to turning on speakers throughout the house.  Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
