My employers IT folks block “x10.com” addresses
« on: February 13, 2006, 06:40:47 PM »

My employer's IT folks block “x10.com”
addresses as spywear/malwear as a result,
not only can I not read x.10 email, but the
active home remote web page will not load or
run.  So I am unable to use I-witness or any
remote control functions from work.  My
cable broadband supplier gives me web space,
for a homepage and I have been able to FTP
to it,but lack the know how knowledge to set
up my “home page” to accept streamed video
from any source much less the   Active home
program.  I am sure I am not the only one
with this problem lacking the knowledge to
develop my own fix. If you  could develop a
package so I could access active home
through my otherwise unused home page, I
would not be constrained by my employers IT
foks.

Your employer's IT policy regarding x10.com
probably resulted from X-10's former
advertising with "pop-unders", which was
incredibly annoying to most folks.  AFAIK
they ceased doing that following a lawsuit by
the alleged holder of a patent on "pop-
unders", so you might ask your employer's IT
people to revisit the policy.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it doesn't work.
X10 on Windows is like that.

Plus most employers arent paying you to watch your house, I would block it too, besides x10 has loads of pop ups and spyware.

My employer's IT folks block “x10.com” ................ So I am unable to use I-witness or any remote control functions from work.  My cable broadband supplier gives me web space, for a homepage ......................

Employers connection.... employers constraints.

If your employer isn't blocking "personal web pages" yet... they will be. Trying to find ways around the security imposed by your employer.... might just get your name on a "list" of some sort... The IT folks have "lists" too. One good way to get alerts from home would be images sent by email. The best way would be to your personal cell phones email account.

And/Or just get Internet service for your phone, and then you can just load up that image anytime you wanted.

You probably won't be able to get on that x10 site on your phone because your phone does not have all the javascript and things, but you could always use the SDK to make something to fit your needs control wise... The PHP example for the SDK would probably be perfect as long as your phone is less than a year old (older phones tried to use WML instead of just reading HTML).

We block all streaming data sources regardless of where they come from, while your home page may not be blocked, if you employer is blocking streaming video then you will be able still get to your home page but still not get your streaming video...

Can you get any streaming source at work? We do allow one, CNN Financial, but that is it. Now one ersatz thing you could do is say 5 second interval video capture, then write a script to ftp the capture set to your web site, will not be live video and you ISP may soon cu tyou off, but it would at least not be bloacked by your employers streaming video block.

That's absolutely correct!

My wife tells me: when we renew our phone contract.. web enabled phones are the standard now. I think this entry into "Web enabled Cell Phones" are a real boon for technology lovers. I am sure most people have seen the X10 iphone app demo on YouTube.

Now we need more third party software... to better allow us to view our home cameras and control our other X10 devices from our cell phones. Tuicemen already has a Web enabled app that provides users with a floor plan format for X10 device control. As I understand it... it allows users the control AND visual feedback.

Like many people... my cell phone is always within armsreach. Being able to intergrate it more with my X10... will be awesome.
