Learning the surround sound remote

What would be the best method to place my input selector from my Pioneer ? example change from DVD to TV or vcr?
Use the macro buttons or is there a better way?

I've been unable to configure my suround sound system (not a X10 Issue) the IR reciever works intermitintly(when it wants) even with the factory remote!
Use the learn function and asign the function to which ever key is most comfortable to you!(you can always change it!)
I think I'd try the input button (bottom centre)
