Can't install software
« on: August 04, 2008, 10:57:34 AM »

I bought a X-10 Activehome 6 piece wireless automation kit on E-bay.
Model # CK11A
(1) 6 in 1 super remote #UR19A
(2) CD -Rom software with access code
(3) Computer interface #CM11A
(4) Keychain remote #KC674
(5) Transceiver module #RR501
(6) Lamp module LM465

I can't install the software on my Windows XP computer. I click on setup and I get --
"Initializing Wise Installation Wizard"  - Then I get "FILE ERROR" Cannot find "SHELL.DLL"
Then I get - "Could not initialize installation. System DLLs corrupt or missing.

I downloaded the newer software version from the web site, and I get the same thing.

Are you in the US?

The CK11A is a serial device and XP has known problems with certain motherboards.  If you are US or Canada based, you need to upgrade to Active Home Pro and the USB CM15A interface.

If you have a floppy drive. Some have said the three floppy set worked better then the single file method.
As Dan said XP and some motherboards had problems.
I know someone posted a way here and will see if I can find it.

One way is the USB to COM cable.   Search the Forums for it, it's there.

I wrote an ActiveX Control in VB6 for Windows using WindowsNT 4.0 Workstation as the development platform and we don't have any problems with serial ports using it on Windows XP. It even works great in VISTA.  Albeit, we had to make sure that we didn't put any of our controls in the system folders: just put 'em in our Program Files folder.

I would say that the problem is not in the serial ports, it's in the software.
If you really want to use the CM11A on XP, I'm sure that there are several here that would help you to tinker around and get it working on XP.

I well could be the software. I had it installed with XP and it installed fine. Though it was before I updated to SP2. Some that have had SP2 before the Active Home Install found it may not install at all.
I did have the loss of communications problem myself.
