Transmitter Switch
« on: December 02, 2008, 09:28:56 AM »

I'd like a switch module that is a transmitter as well as a receiver. That way I can directly control a light fixture that is hard-wired to the switch and other X10 devices that I would like to have come on whenever the hard-wired light is turned on, such as perimeter lighting and a main central light.

Insteon's ICON switches do just that.

Search for ICON at the site Tuicemen provided.

I have looked for Icon switches, but they seem to be discontinued.

1. Do the SwitchLinc switches also work as a transmitter for other X10 devices?
2. Are there any in-wall transmitters that look like a regular wall switch?  The only one that I could find is also discontinued (SWITCHLINC TRANSMITTER-WHITE
Item# 12080W: http://www.smarthome.com/12080W/SwitchLinc-Transmitter-X10-X-10-Decora-Style-Keypad/p.aspx)

Thanks!

The Insteon version will do the same thing and can even have X10 scenes added to them.
One thing both the Icon and Insteon switches need a real neutral power wire in the switch box. Unlike many of the X10 two wire ones that only use a line and load.

1. By "scenes" do you mean that the Insteon switch will control multiple other X10 address and dim them etc.?  (I have neutrals, so that is not an issue)  I looked through the manuals, but did not see how to set the unit to do this.

2. Could I simply use one of these switches as a transmitter?  In other words, physically install it, but do not connect it to a light.  This is the only way I can think of having a transmitter look like a regular light switch.  Any ideas?

OK, I found two existing products for the in-wall transmitter issue, but they are both more expensive than getting a switch that will also transmit!  Crazy!

Dimming

Non-Dimming

Another option would be to get something like the TB134, TB234, and TB334.  I could then use any standard light switch to close the dry contact.  The problem is then having an ugly cap covering the box next to the switches.
