Very odd problem
« on: December 17, 2008, 01:15:21 PM »

Okay, here's a puzzler for you guys.

On one wall of my room, I have four modules, two Wall Switch modules, one Lamp and one Appliance. I also have two controllers, my HR12A/TM751 closes to this wall, and an old BSR 16 unit console on the other side of the room. The BSR unit can control ALL 4 of the modules, but the TM751 can only seem to hit the two wall switch modules. The odd part is, the Plug-in modules are in the same location as the WS modules. The Appliance module is plugged into an outlet that is in the SAME BOX as the WS, and the lamp module is connected to a four-outlet that is wired to the box with the other WS. There is nothing else plugged into either outlet currently. One of the outlets is a Cooper GFCI, newly installed, but this problem existed well before that was installed, and the second WS module is on the load side of the GFCI. Anyone have any solutions to this?

Wall switches and outlets in same room may not be on same branch circuit and you still could have a noise problem, or  phase coupling problem. However if you have played with X10 long enough to still have a BSR controller, you already know about phase coupling and noise issues.

Swap positions of the TM751 and the old BSR controller...what happens? If the BSR continues to control all units, my giuess would be the BSR unit puts out a stonger signal than the TM751. May be time for an amplifier/coupler such as XTB II.

all sockets/switches in this room are on the same circuit. oddly enough, when I moved the Appliance Module to another outlet, my TM751 is suddenly able to hit all four modules now.

Interesting. Do you have a X10 level meter? Are these the only X10 modules you have?

Don't own a level meter, no

Those are the only four on that wall. I have a good few, all work great.

What is plugged into the appliance module and when you moved it did that device go with it or was it left plugged in to another module, just the outlet or not plugged in at all.

Maybe that device is giving off power line noise? is it new?

Problem was traced down to an electronic music box addon for christmas lights, which seemed to be chewing up a good amount of my TM751's signal. Once disconnected, all modules function like a dream.

Glad you tracked it down.
