PC Required
« on: December 19, 2008, 11:27:33 AM »

I guess I have not wished to use the MyHouse Online plug-in yet because it requires a PC to be left on.  Has anyone found an alternative, say running the software on a web-enabled device running Linux, like some of the NAS boxes out there?

What was you reason for connecting on line?
To view cams or total home automation?
Myhouse requires AHP and the CM15A connected to the PC! :(
Viewing A cam threw another means is easy and some here have done it!
Many use Linux for there home automation so running a Linux box is easy  but you'll run into snags running windows apps on Linux!
And Myhouse isn't dependable enough to even try incorporate it into Linux!
I'm sure some Linux users will jump in with some software ideas! ;)

One solution is to turn on your computer remotely. Just plug your computer into an appropriate module and use a telephone interface to turn on the computer remotely.

I knew an older electrician MANY years ago... who told me stories. Like.. having an older customer that would unplug every device before leaving the house (and shake the plugs... to make sure any left over electric would be released).

Computers can still use a little bit of power and can seem wasteful. But a computer can do SO MUCH to make a house smarter. IMHO a running PC is (at this time) a necessary part of Home Automation. I couldn't do a fraction of what I do with Home Automation... without a HA PC.
