Also when inspecting the panel, check for red wires on single pole breakers. 12/3 and 14/3 have black, red, and white wires.

I recall that a common neutral circuit was recommended for kitchen circuits so that a given receptacle could power two high-current devices.  I doubt that many electricians actually did that because of the extra work.
