help? XPCR did not fix my prob
« on: December 18, 2009, 09:24:07 AM »

I can't find my original post, so I'll start over...

I have a fairly "basic" setup.  Using an CM15 with AHP to send saved-timer on/off to my Christmas Lights (but would like to keep my setup and get back to running my outdoor lights after the holiday season, thus my long-term outlook...).

When I move my CM15 module around to different outlets, I get different lamp modules to work reliably -- can't get all of them working at once, unfortunately.  So, I bought and installed a XPCR module in my service panel.  This didn't seem to help anything.  Same difficulties.

I thought the XPCR would amplify the signal (and repeat it) and I would be good-to-go.  (Does it amplify?  I know it repeats across the split-120v.)

Anyway, I'm puzzled as to where to turn next.  I have a lot of CFL's in the house that could be causing problems (I don't know for sure), and I don't have any X10 troubleshooting equipment or o-scopes to help me.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
AJ

The XPCR is a coupler repeater and should send the signal back on the second phase.
I would double check that the White; Red and the first Black wires are connected properly. With the red and black on opposite phases.

It is possible you have a severe noise or signal sucker condition. Since you originally found that moving the CM15A changed modules that responded.
Can you try turning off lamps and see if things change.
Can you unplug [off many times leaves the device in standby] things like TVs and other electronic goodies to see if they change things.

Not sure if we gave you Jeff's great troubleshooting tutorials link so here it is.

I searched, but did not find an answer to this one...

I located the XPCR adjacent to a "Whole House Surge Suppressor" (and is properly wired across the two phases).  I was thinking that the surge suppressor would only be concerned with major voltage spikes, and not cause any attenuation to my X10 signals/repeating.  Does anyone know any different?

Thanks for the guide-links...going there now!
