You can get cat5 cable as UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) and STP (Shielded Twisted Pair).  Even though the STP cable is shielded though I wouldn't call it coax.

Pretty much any piece of copper wire in th 18 guage range should do.  You don't necessarily have to strip the casing from the wire either in the case of cat5.  I would not leave the RG6 center conductor in it's casing though because the outer braided shielding will interfere.

Go to a welding supply and get some brass rods.........works great !
