DS7000 + MAGIC JACK? DO YOU HAVE IT??
« on: April 06, 2010, 11:53:02 AM »

Has anyone tried the Magicjack with their ds7000 security system??

Does it dial out to you?? Can you dial in to it??

I do not have a land line and refuse to pay 12 dollars a month for one since I have a dedicated smartphone.

20$ per year seems more feasible to me.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.  ;-)

You are aware that burglars can cut power to your home rendering the magic jack useless?

By defaults the security panel has a 9V battery backup (most use a 12v), and uses a land line which is not affected by power loss.

Also most alarm panels use an rj-31x jack:

... since I have a dedicated smartphone.

By smartphone do you mean a VOIP phone or a cellular phone or something like that?

One of the best benefits of a traditional landline phone (not a cordless system) is that power to the phone is supplied by the phone company.  The power continues during a power outage.  A cordless phone system will go dead during a power outage unless the base unit has battery backup.

You are aware that burglars can cut power to your home rendering the magic jack useless?

If the magic jack phone pc, dsl/cable modem and router are all protected by a battery UPS, then phone service should continue during a power outage.

BTW, I have magic jack, love it and use it extensively for my home based business.  I would never use it for a critical application like a security system

according to the DS7000 manual I'm reading - this device does NOT operate with a 31X jack.
it would be interesting to see if it could DTMF dial out using a Magic Jack.

It's likely that the the originating telephone number would be strange - last time I looked Magic Jack was handing out phone numbers with some pretty weird NPANXX's.
But I guess that wouldn't matter.

I have a 1500 watt ups backup on my computer.  Thanks for the heads up though.

Once again I appreciate the replies but would love to hear from an OWNER of a magic jack.  I did read on another thread how someone had one setup and said it worked great.  I just wanted to get the details and confirm before a purchase.

Thanks again!

I own two Magic Jacks.  I sent one to my son in New Zealand.  He now has a local US based phone number and can call any number in the US at no additional charge.  When he calls us the voice quality is good and there is absolutely no delay or lag time as I've noticed on other VOIP systems.

I use the other one extensively in my home based business.  The quality is usually also good as I call around Illinois.  The only negatives I've found are:
  • sometimes the first call does not go through and I have to redial
  • sometimes the voice quality is not good and I have to redial
  • I make test calls inbound to my Magic Jack from another phone and sometimes my call goes straight to voicemail instead of ringing my pc.

As I said earlier, I like it alot.

Also, I contacted Magic Jack directly and bought mine with a 30-day trial/money back deal.  Maybe they still have that deal.  This deal was not available in stores, they said.

Of, course I paid for S&H which bumped the price up some from the price in a store.  But there was no sales tax, so maybe it was a wash.

So Mel99, how well does it work with your DS7000??  I can get a magicjack shipped to my door off of ebay with 1 year of service for 20 bucks.

Thanks for the input!!
