total noob question
« on: October 26, 2010, 01:55:09 PM »

Alright forgive the noobness.  I am seriously considering purchasing an x10 for my shop.  I am interested only in a stripped down version.  Basically 2 windows and a door with a really loud siren.  I don't want another keychain remote, as I already have 2 from my vehicles.  Sooooo here's my main question.  Can I arm the console from inside the shop before I leave and disarm the console from inside the shop after I come in before the loud siren goes off?
Thanks for your input.

The x10 security consoles don't have a disarm button on them.
They do have an arm button which I believe has a 1 min delay once pressed before arming.
This would allow you to hit arm and leave before it arms the system.
You would have to use a door sensor set to max which has a 30 second delay before the alarm trips and leave a security remote or security key fob at your shop to disarm the system within the 30 second delay time.

Thanks for your quick answer.  That is acceptable solution.

If you want a loud siren you would have to wire a siren to a universal module I believe. Otherwise using x10's Powerhorns, they aren't that loud only slightly annoying..

The large powerhorn sirens are 110dB, so these are fairly loud.
I believe the main console is only 95dB.

sure the powerhorns alert the people inside the building but if you want to alert the neighborhood then you need one of those 3rd party outdoor sirens

You don't really need to carry the remote... you could leave it in your car and arm and disarm from there. Arming and disarming will "flash" a light (even the X10 floodlight PR511). That is great for a confirmation. The flashing lights (more like a pulse) is extremely effective after-hours... much less so in daylight.

I find the large powerhorn to be painfully loud. It should alert anyone close by... so they can avoid confronting a potentially dangerous intruder. Car alarm type sirens... don't seem to attract the attention we once thought they might.
