I'd like to use a non-x10 camera on my pan/tilt, but worry about the weight of the camera. Does anybody know how much is too much for this unit?

Since X10 designs the Ninja for specifically for X10 cameras, I don't believe they publish the spec. A rule of thumb for X10 is: they design for very low cost, hence there is little "margin".

Demensions (WXDXH)   3 x 5 x 3.5 in (73 x 125 x 86 mm)
Weight   16 oz (450g)

Thats the specs on the camera i am using on a ninja base

Specs were taken from the camera manufactured website

Thanks guys!  I was contemplating using a standard Sony Mini-DV cam, but that may be pushing my luck weight wise.

Probably so.

There are some previous posts about the pan/tilt gears being plastic, and breaking easily.  There is a mod to replace them with metal gears here:

I found that the pan works fine, but the ninja sometimes has a hard time "lifting" or tilting a heavier camera up.

I have clover camera and it works great. I can't use x10 camera they don't work in my house i went with all wired camera. The pan tilt is the cheapest way to go i just order two more.

Have anyone put camera houseing on it ? Not to sure about the weight.

I use a SWANN 670, and its pretty bulky and the center of gravity has to be moved. I fabricated a piece of aluminum and attached it to the NIJA removable mounting, I position the camera to the rear of the plate so the center of gravity was more to the rear. I have not used it for a lengthly period but it seems to be working fine now.
