Please help me wire !!
« on: April 19, 2011, 01:43:36 PM »

Guys,

Am hoping you can help.

I am looking to setup a couple of 12v piezo sirens to go off in the house when the alarm is tripped.

I was told it could be done using...

a UM7206 X10 Universal Module http://www.letsautomate.com/10223.cfm?
a 12V DC Adaptor UK Plug 500Ma Regulated &
a 12Vdc High Power Piezo Siren http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360199562493

All of the bits have turned up but I can't figure out how to connect  B:(  Please help !!!

Thanks in advance

Who told you that? Would be much easier to plug the DC adaptor into an Appliance Module.

However, based on your description; you could carefully cut ONE of the two wires from the DC adaptor and connect the two stripped ends to the terminals of the UM7206.

Which alarm are you using?

If your alarm sends the All Lights On and All Units Off commands during an alarm. That flashes all the lights on the security house code.
The UM506 is not going to work.
It does not respond to an All Lights On command. Just a All Units Off command.

If it is like our new SC1200 that sends two addresses during a alarm. That also turns the lights on for positive armed indication. The siren is going to sound everytime you arm the system.

So before cutting the cord on the wall wart supply. Maybe you should try and trigger it with the alarm system.

Guys... couldn't Stace just order a couple X10 sirens if this is an X10 alarm we're talking about?

If.... this is another brand alarm... using a powerflash module to add additional X10 devices... has been done for years (decades?). Normally tapping your alarms external siren outputs and attaching that to the powerflash unit. But... connecting devices to modern alarms.. isn't like the old days.

Sometimes... people will mix-up the powerflash modules with the universal modules.

  • A Powerflash Module (PF284) is triggered by a low voltage input, and sends an X10 powerline signal.
  • A Universal Module (UM506) is triggered by an X10 powerline signal and switches (on/off) a low voltage device.

Thanks guys,

I assumed that I would strip the wires on the DC adaptor and conect to the UM7206, I wasn't sure how the siren connected......

when it all turned up today, the UM7206 already has a power cable.  So I'm very, very confused!!!

My alarm is a SC2800 www.keeneelectronics.co.uk/electronics/info/dnl_files/pdfs/SC2800i.pdf

I also have a 7208 http://www.letsautomate.com/10544.cfm? but my issue with it is that it waits 30 seconds before it sounds.

I wanted a siren that would 'sound' as soon as the alarm was tripped.

Thank you for the added information.

The system you have is different than both our SC1200A and DS7000.

I did a quick look at your consoles manual.
I believe the UM506 may trigger on the Siren Address as it seems to be a different from the one that flashes the lights.

Thanks Brian.

I'm of the impression I can set its address to the same as the external siren.

The biggest problem right now is how I connect the 12v adaptor, the siren and the 7206?  It's bloody confusing!!  :-\

I have a couple of the piezo sirens like yours. The good news is; this thing will liquefy your brain in 15 seconds if you are within 10 feet when it comes on. Very loud and painful, also very directional. An intruder will not stay in the area unless they are stone deaf.
The bad news is; it is polarity sensitive so you need to make sure you connect the power supply correctly. Positive voltage to the red lead, etc.

stace; Does the wall wart power supply have a connector on it and do you want to cut it off?
You maybe able to find a mating DC power Jack to mate with the supplies connector.
You may also find a diagram on the supply showing the connectors polarity.
If you cut the connector off. You would have to determine which of the wires is the positive connection and the other would be the negative connection.

Basically you would connect both of the sirens negative wires to the power supplies negative connection.
Connect the supplies positive connection to one of the UM506s terminals.
Connect both of the sirens positive wires to the other terminal of the UM506.

Thanks Guys,

Having spoken again with the guy who told me it can be done, he has suggested...

You would cut off the AC adaptor's plug

Black/White = +12V
Black = Gnd

Wire the Black/White to one of the terminals on the UM7206. The other terminal would then be wired to the Siren's +12V input

The Black wire would run to the siren's Gnd input

Plug the AC adaptor in
Plug the UM7206 in, and send it an On

It's relay will trigger which will connect the +12V input to the output going to the siren, and the siren will sound, until you send the UM7206 an Off

Sound like a plan ?

Diagram looks good and should work.

Many of the X10 Powerhorns are triggered by a series on On Off commands over the power lines. So your universal module may go on and off during an alarm.

Let us know your results when the project is finished.
