That listing shows 420 horizontal resolution, as you know, a HECK of a downgrade from 944. I'll check around though based on the information you provided, however 1028*944 doesnt sound right, resolutions should be in the neighborhood of 4:3, that's more like 10:9.1, almost a square image.

Can you post a screenshot or picture of the DVR screen so we can get an idea of the clarity, Im really looking for cameras that can read a license plate from 30 feet.

My brother bought a Zmodo I think, off woot a while back, he's not overly thrilled with the clarity, and as I recall, the FPS was only half was it was supposed to be, which divided by 8 cameras ended up pretty low.

I also have a hi end IP camera I bought this is H.264, 15 frames/sec, 1Mbps compression, 1280x1024.  It is better than the zmodo ones, but they are way better than the x10 resolution.  I believe the 1000x900 or whatever it was.  I will take a license plate out 30 feet and take a pic of it to see what it does....

Id really like a part number and ballpark price on that. I think I want one high rez, possibly PTZ and 3-4 standard PTZ. I have an airsight that will work amazing for my indoor, but I want one on the driveway, another on the front of the house and one on the back.

Of course I have two floodcams (one still in the box) one regular commercial security camera, one really nice camera with high night visibility, (not IR but high end high sensitivity sensor), a heated security housing and a ton of coax and a DVR that I would have to mothball, but I think it would be worth it.

update in case anyone is interested in low cost wired cameras with dvd and network stuff....  4 cameras $ 120 while they last.  I have been happy with them.  I think the reported 1028x944 res reported on the dvr is prob not correct and the stated 656x492 pixels is...  but it is such higher resolution than any of my old x10 cameras it seems HD :)

I suspect the system capability is 1024x944 (or whatver it is) but the cameras can only produce something less than that, still good though!

I bought the 8-input DVR with 4 wired IR-capable cams when they came around for $125-140 (I forget).  Very similar to Ben's deal.  Zmodo as well.

I will say that there are different models out there.  You will need to purchase a hard drive for either the 4 or 8-camera DVR mentioned.  Depending on the size you buy, that could be an additional $100.  Some models have a fan, which is better for hard drive life, as it is constantly spinning/recording, even in motion-detect mode.  As it detects motion, it actually saves a few seconds before the motion, allowing you to save the act in its entirety.  Also, some have audio recording with the video.  The cheaper ones may have one or no audio inputs.
