MS18A Red LED
« on: October 18, 2011, 07:52:02 PM »

Hi guys my sister just bought a few of these to go with her PS561 system but noticed the the LED is now GREEN opposed to red how strange never saw a motion detector with a green LED just wondering who's bright idea this was typical x10 just missing the mark, she wanted me to ask if she might be able to change the color to red maybe with some nail polish to match the others.  :-\    :P

X10 probably ran out of red LEDs for their final production run (hey it could happen). Nail polish will just cover the LED completely so no light will be seen. Pretty hard to change green light to red light. About the only answer is to change the LED itself.

The Green LED is probably made with Green Plastic. So nail polish, as dave w mentioned, would cover it or depending on the plastic, maybe melt it.

I had a chance to look at one of my MS18A Motion Sensors. As right now they are in a storage container.
My Date Code 10L52 also has a Green LED and it is Green plastic.

You also have to consider that unlike an incandescent bulb, LED emission is monochromatic.  A colored filter works with an incandescent bulb because the entire spectrum is generated by the white-hot filament.  Since the green LED only emits the green wavelength, adding a red filter (which would only pass the red wavelength) would block any light at all.

Nobody was going to help?
There where two responses to your question in around 24 hours.  ???

DS12A X10 Door/Window Sensor LED is Green.

Green LEDs have been used for awhile.

The OEM from X10 for the  Radio Shack 49-1000 Security Console kit also used Green LEDs.
The Radio Shack 49-1001 DS11A Door/Window Sensor was Green LED.
The Radio Shack 49-1003 MS17A Security Motion Sensor was Green LED.

Hi thanks, So the green LED is actually by design then and not a production error as someone else thought.

Yes by design and they where also Green in the Radio Shack 49-1000 series made a few years back by X10. That look similar to the present ones.

Hi just saw your response wonder why GREEN  ???  B:(  never seen a sensor that was green they have always been red just wonder why they decided to go with green that usually indicates sometime positive I would associate RED with a violation of an area.

Knowing X10's history of cutting corners, my guess is the green LED was cheaper than the red one.
