Movies on HDTV using airpad

I would like to be able to download a movie from the web to my Airpad then connect it to my Large screen TV for playback.  Currently I can connect the airpad to my HDTV but as soon as I do I lose the Airpad screen and therefore the ability to select any options like a movie paly option.  Am I missing something here?

If you have our first airpad, the tablet's screen will blank out when you connect the HDMI cable. In order to get around this, start the movie on the tablet first, then connect the cable. Alternatively, you can connect a USB mouse to the tablet which will create a mouse pointer on the TV.

Thanks to everybody who responded.  Issue resolved.  FIX= using a wireless mouse.
