Internet control without a computer
« on: November 05, 2012, 06:43:35 AM »

I just picked up some land in NC. It has a small cabin with power. Internet will be done via satellite.
I want to set up one or two IP cams to look at the place remotely.
The cams will also take 6 pictures each and email them to me. Nice to see deer setting them off.
The Internet package I want to try is 10GB/Month.
Do you think it's possible these cams will exceed the limit?

I would like to be able to shut them down if the home page shows I'm getting close.
Is there any way I can do this with X10 and without having a computer running?

Any ideas?

Thanks

If you have a cm15a then you don't need the computer running. This is what I do to my IPs:
I plug the IP power cord into a LM 15a ( rocket socket) that I can control with a remote or with iPhone.  Because of the position of the IP, I only use it to reboot IP that is in case it need to be rebooted but you could use the same concept to turn on/off.

I think there is a flaw in my last post. You will need the computer running to turn off cameras. All iPhone apps that I know don't shut off the cameras, they reboot not shutoff. And to use iPhone app for x10, like X10 commander or  X10 mobile app you need server module which is on the computer running AHP.

Sorry about the incorrect info.

Have a great day.

You could do this with one of the "Vera" products http://www.smarthome.com/13705/Mi-Casa-Verde-VeraLite-US-INSTEON-Compatible-Z-Wave-Controller/p.aspx and some z-wave modules.  Although technically the Vera is a computer, it's self-contained and has very low power use.  And the Smarthome website says internet access is free "No monthly fee for remote access to your Z-Wave network from any web enabled device (smart-phones, Notebook computers)".

Couldn't/can't you do the same with the INSTEON device:  http://www.smarthome.com/2412N/SmartLinc-INSTEON-Central-Controller/p.aspx

I've been concidering that myself... since it can also handle X10.

I will look into those modules. I also thought I can just log onto the cams and set the motion alarms to not send pictures, if my usage is getting high.

My only concern is to not exceed the monthly usage. The only other way I can stop it is to drive 13 hours one way.... ::)

Thank you for the info...
