New RaspBerry Pi TV HAT
« on: October 18, 2018, 09:53:33 AM »

I use my PI 3B+ as a streaming device as well as A HA server at my off grid place.
This new HAT looks interesting.

However I suspect this would over tax my current setup.  ::) :'
It might be time to look at a dedicated PI for  my entertainment needs and a separate one for HA.

I don't think that DVB-T2 & DVB-T are used in North America so we'll have to wait for an ATSC version.

It does say
Quote
allows you to receive digital terrestrial TV broadcast systems which includes DVB-T and DVB-T2 on a Raspberry P

Since it says "including" not "limited to" I suspect most over the air digital signals can be seen.

Sadly my off grid place currently is out of range of digital transmitted signals.

From the specs listed I would think that ATSC is not supported since it only lists the DVB standards.

Specification

Sony CXD2880 TV tuner
Supported TV standards: DVB-T2, DVB-T
Reception frequency: VHF III, UHF IV, UHF V
Channel bandwidth:
DVB-T2: 1.7MHz, 5MHz, 6MHz, 7MHz, 8MHz
DVB-T: 5MHz, 6MHz, 7MHz, 8MH
Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) is a widely adopted standard for transmitting broadcast Television, countries that have adopted the DVB standard can be found here; https://www.dvb.org/resources/public/images/site/dvb-t2_map.pdf

Your most likely right, hopefully they will add the other standards if possible with out a hardware upgrade. ::) :'

They'll need a different tuner chip for that but even so, unless you're in an urban area, you'll need a decent size antenna.  When we got home Tuesday night the Tivo disk had died so we couldn't watch cable. I have a 6 bowtie array with an amplifier in the attic for just such occasions and even that has problems picking up someof the stations from the antenna farm 42 miles away.

I have an indoor antenna w/amp and get 25 stations. However, there's seldom anything I find worth watching. ::) Of course, there's always Amazon & Netflix.

I dropped cable when the local cable company refused to let me supply their ski masks.  :D

I currently get free SAT service of 5 channels at the off grid place but I'm told that service ends next year. Currently I watch more content from the internet. The only thing I'll miss is local news and weather but even that can be found online now.
