Radio Shack Maybe Gone Soon.
« on: February 04, 2015, 08:08:09 AM »

The good old Radio Shack that some of us grew up with. Looks like it is going out of business.
May close half the stores and Sprint Corp is in talks to take over the remaining store locations.

I saw that their stock sales where halted on the Stock Exchange.

I maybe trying to get one part I still need for a backup DC power plug today. Will see if the store is still open.

We all saw this day coming.  They announced last year that they were closing over 1,000 stores.

It's really a shame to see them go.  As a kid, I visited Radio Shack at least once every couple of weeks to buy parts and gadgets with my allowance.  Not only is it something I grew up with, but it's also the only (sort of) small parts electronics distributor that still does individual counter sales around here, so it's still viable for me when I need something fast.  That said, compared to any internet supplier, the selection is terrible, the prices are at least quadrupled, the salespeople are rude and clueless and get in my way, and I often have to wait at least 10 minutes to check out while a person who doesn't speak English is being sold a cell phone.  I'm sad to say that I won't miss them.

Back in the 60's I used to frequent what may have been the original Radio Shack on Commonwealth Ave in Boston.  The parking lot was up on the roof of the 1-story building.  Inside were bins of all sorts of electronic components.  And there were always some odds and ends.  One time I remember they had a HUGE speaker at least 4 feet in diameter in a plywood enclosure.  It looked like it was driven by an array of solenoids distributed across the cone.  I wonder what kind of bass that could deliver.  It was a great place for an engineering geek.

You ever get deja vu?

My childhood Tandy store closed about 25 years ago - all the products were the same as RadioShack, just the currency and voltage changed  :'

This is what happens when fresh out, Harvard MBAs are allowed to run the company. The company's core strengths are abandoned for "what's hot now" marketing. Motorola is another example of what happens when the bean counters take over.

Nothing lasts forever. It's a bummer to see some of the changes. I wish I knew where all the recent advances in technology was taking us (so I could get there first). But I have no idea where all this "advancement" is taking society.

One store I used to visit has closed here, another (which just recent moved) is closing, another remains open.  I haven't taken the time to cruise around the 'burbs and check out the others.

FWIW
Was in local Radio Shark looking for a battery holder this last tuesday.  The manager said she had closed the Radio Shark in the local mall the weekend prior, and regional management said to mark everything down 90%(!) on Saturday. She said they had been marking down prices the week before but still had about 50% stock remaining when management called and said blow it out. If only I had known, I had just bought a new DVM with PC interface at regular price...sigh.
