The Wink HUB had a big problem when they updated a security certificate.
Some where recovered remotely but some are bricked and have to be factory repaired.
Nothing like a cloud base system.  ???

One more reason to stay away from cloud based systems.

I love the idea of my own server looking after my house and now a days these can be run on systems as small as an android TV stick.

....... now a days these can be run on systems as small as an android TV stick.

I always thought we'd get down to control through programs ran on tiny computers.

But the cloud is still growing up. And technologies mature faster than [human] children. No computer... will ever be smaller than the virtual computer. And soon... the most powerful computers will also be virtual [cloud] computers as well.

And technologies mature faster than [human] children.

And hackers will always keep up. :(
And businesses will always go under, with cloud based ones you may just feel more pain. :(

The cloud does have its place I'm just not sure I'll adapt, but then resistance may be futile ;)

I'm with Tuicemen - I don't want a cloudburst raining on my parade.

If the cloud based data and software were open source and available for local backup, then I'd feel more comfortable with it.  I'm ok with data that doesn't affect anything being stored out there (local weather data for instance), but I'm not going to have my HA server on such a system.

Point in case, I was looking at a weather station a few years ago.  The best option for a wireless setup that appeared to be affordable was the Acurite weather gateway.  That approach included a thermohygrometer for external use, a receiver that included an LCD display with indoor temp/humidity, and the network plug "weather gateway".  This device received the signal from the outdoor unit (but not the indoor) and uploaded the data to Acurite's cloud.  I bought the unit and it worked, but then I found out that it was proprietary and would not allow data to be stored locally nor sent to a 3rd party server (Weather Underground, Pachube, etc).  So, I took it back.  I didn't trust that Acurite wouldn't change the service to be paid, cancel it, or even sell my data without consent.  If WU, Pachube, etc go under then I might lose the data stored there.  But, since I know that is a possibility, I'd be careful to keep local backups of whatever I need.  The Acurite approach wouldn't allow for local backup since it doesn't expose the data locally (without somehow hacking the gateway or intercepting the transmission).

I believe the new Acurite weather gateway has a or can use a console that can connect to a PC. It also now allows uploading to Weather Underground and several other PSW sites.
I use the VIS Reader which can retrieve info from Acurite consoles to save the data and create a CSV file which I use in my HA.

Maybe Wink will end up enabling a option for a local server or something to fall back on. ::) :'

At least with the AHP SDK  and creative minds we users had other software to fall back on when their servers went down.

Gee. If we outlaw cloud servers.
Comcast's new X1 Entertainment Operating System will be defunct.  rofl

As my system stands I can't even turn my lights on from beyond the end of my driveway because I refuse to be net-tied.

When the Zombie Apocalypse comes I'll still have electricity and automation, but I might have to redefine my programs a touch.

If I had cloud based anything I'd probably have to remember how manual light-switches operate :)

Although my explanations may not be exactly clear, I do hope for slightly less cloudy.

Resistance is futile.

I am already dependent on apps.... that can not be purchased.. but can only be rented per annual fee. But data is backed-up (on different servers) and someday vendors/service providers/brands will be switched. It is the way it already is. Soon expect Windows, Apple, and Google to make OS's available by annual fee [only] as well.

If I had cloud based anything I'd probably have to remember how manual light-switches operate :)

Manual? What is this "manual" you speak of?

Hackers, burglars, robbers, and thieves.... oh my.

Burglars rob homes and apartments every minute of everyday... yet I still have a home. Thieves pick pockets, and robbers take possessions with threats of violence from guns and knifes.... everyday... in the community where I live. Yet I still carry a wallet... and I still carry cash... and I still travel about freely and without fear and worry.

So why do some harbor such great fear of hackers? Hackers are the dark shadow... the unseen evil. The monster hiding under our beds... when we were children.

Hackers pose no new threats. Hackers are just an automated version of the same of thievery that has always plagued men.

You forgot terrorists. ;)
They all want the most for their efforts and go after the biggest fish in the sea.

Still I bet your door is closed and lock at night! ;)

I did forget about the terrorist!!!! But... I think Americas President killed them all (I am sure he said he did).

Still I bet your door is closed and lock at night! ;)

Door locked? Are you kidding me? I am an automation guy.... this place is a fortress (and my router is impenetrable too)
