Funny. I live in NYC with the highest electrical rates in the country but there's only so much you can do before it gets crazy like in the cartoon.

That doesn't help.  A transformerless power supply consumes the same amount of power regardless of the load.  Removing the LED just forces more current through the shunt zener regulator - possibly shortening its life.

I think that is why the LED is blanked when X10 devices transmit.  When not transmitting, the LED does something useful with the otherwise wasted energy.
