Vivint. I didn't see this coming.
« on: April 29, 2019, 12:57:28 PM »

The wife and I was in one of the "warehouse shopping places" over the weekend. And... admittedly it can be nice to try a sample of some product we wouldn't normally buy a five pound bag of to see if we like it (or not). Of course, that means they also have Satellite, and/or cable TV, and home improvement sales people... hawking their wares in various areas of the store(s).

One peddler represented Vivint (https://www.vivint.com/). A Smarthome-Security specialist/outfit.

OK... not so extremely different from Security [alarm] people who "add" some smart home devices. Or even way-different from a cable company who also markets a a bit of a smart home installation. But as we all know.... how a product is packaged can make a huge difference.

They were selling the "integration of modern technologies". A one-stop-shop for all the great things everyone wants in their lives today. Installed and setup by experts so people don't have to wear tin-foil hats or worry about Jeff Bezos and his new squeeze sitting around the house at night.... listening to private conversations. Or whatever it is people worry about.

Anyway.... even though professional installations aren't new.... I think new ideas for marketing HA may alter the HA world completely.

There's certainly nothing new about system integrators, they've been around a long time.  For folks who are tech adverse and don't mind paying a bunch of monthly fees they do serve a need.

That's news to me! Amazon is the first biggest only one I am aware of (maybe google too).

What others are you referring to? Besides the ADT-type security alarm people I mentioned? For MANY the reduction in home/business/property insurance received by using profession monitoring/protection far out-weights the cost/fees the professionals charge. It all depends on the value of what you're trying to protect.

For folks who are tech adverse and don't mind paying a bunch of monthly fees they do serve a need.

That's why I posted it here. I know a LOT of the users here seem somewhat Internet Leary. I'd think they might find value in getting their home/lives on-line.

Here in SW FL there are at least 2 dozen companies offering what Vivint offers and have been doing so for years. Many builders in the area involve them during construction and the homeowners continue with them.  Security, AV, HA... they'll do it all.

As far as users here being internet leery, something you've mentioned frequently, I just don't see that.  I do see that many are not completely trusting of large corporations but I don't think that's limited to just the internet.

..... As far as users here being internet leery, ..... I just don't see that. ....

I was merely being kind when I used the internet leery term. The fear of "large corporations," governments, climate, ETC. it's all the same thing. They are all based on the same internally generated emotion(s).

This new company [Vivint] offers customers a chance to discard their fears and enjoy modern society/technology. But I don't actually expect the die-hard "remote-control users" here.... to grow into that.

Revealing the truth doesn't always work like it did for Toto.  Those who are all in don't like others legitimate reasons for not being as interested.  Either you are for it or you are a flat earth, climate denier who refuses vaccines and is complicit with Russian interference...   :'

Corporate fear hating Socialist off their meds..... or normal person who doesn't have anxiety issues? YOU raationalize that it's political? You can search the forum here. In the decades and millions of unsecured X10 users.... NOT ONE.... reported hack. It has NEVER been about what CAN be done. Every phone in America, Canada, and most of the rest of the planet is monitored by the American Government. Yet some fools worry about net appliances. It isn't rational. The conspiracies you witness... are only seen in your imagination.  You should share your visions with your healthcare provider. I can not help you.
