Extending network to detached building
« on: March 23, 2025, 04:16:58 PM »

I have my router set up in my basement which gives decent coverage throughout my house but it does not extend beyond the back deck.  This is generally ok, but I am now looking at how to get my network to extend to my detached shop around 150ft away.  I tried adding a router as an AP on the second floor in my wife's office that faces that direction but that only gets me to the door of the building and not through it.  I don't need high speeds since this is primarily to allow me to share files with and manage my CNC mill.

My top 2 options right now are either getting a pair of wireless bridge devices or a pair of powerline network adapters.  The wireless would probably be fine but the ones I've seen so far are either commercial grade (including price) or ratings suggest marginal quality.  The powerline network adapters have been common for a long time but I'm not sure if they will interfere with X10.  I've only seen 1 thread where someone asks the question in 2010 and it went unanswered.  Any thoughts?

FWIW, this is one option I was thinking for the powerline option.  It would connect to the router in the basement and then add a sort of mini-router in the shop.

As for wireless bridge, the Ubiquiti seem really popular.

I have run into this problem as my house and workshop are on separate ends of a 150 foot lot. I have had good luck with a wireless extender in the shop. The one I use is sold on Amazon, made by Gkaikpe and has a coverage of 9840 Sq.ft and 60 devices. I have hd no problem other than losing power in our long winters up here. This may not be the proper solution for you, but it has worked well for me.

I've used the TP-Link powerline extenders and there was no X10 interference.

To that, you can add a WiFi access point.

That's one of the sets I was considering.  I have an old router that I'll use in the shop to connect the devices.  Good to know it should work fine.
