Garage Door opening and closing
« on: May 03, 2005, 02:52:19 PM »

I am looking for an easy way to open and
close my garage door from my Activehome Pro
software on my home PC.  Is there a way to
program the garage opener's "learned code"
and transmit it at will from my PC?  Any
suggestions on other methods?  The opener is
a Craftsman 1/2 HP.  My wife kills me
everytime I leave that dang door open!  So I
really appreciate any of your help.  :-)
Thanks, Paul

Paul: It's not possible for ActiveHome Pro to
send signals directly to your garage door.
You can connect an X10 Universal Module
(UM506) to your garage door opener so that it
can be controller by ActiveHome Pro, though.
If you wire the UM506 to your opener in
parallel with the wall switch that controls
the door, you'll be able to control the door
with ActiveHome Pro, and other X10 remotes
and controllers.

Ahhh, very good!  I think the UM506 will do
the trick just fine.  Thank-you for your
extremely fast help!  I am excited to get it
all hooked up!

My plan is to remote into my PC at home over
the internet and take a peek through the
garage camera monitor.  If the door is not
closed, wallah!  Thanks again!

If I were doing this I'd want to put a micro-
switch in series with the control module so
that the module could only control the door
when the door was fully open.  (micro-switch
closed by fully open door). This way the X10
system can only close the door not open it.
I'd never trust the contents of my garage to
an X10 system.

My X10 garage door interface is a 3 pin
appliance module that switches power to the
door opener. The door is disabled unless
power is commanded on and then the door is
commanded open/closed.  I keep the keychain
remote with the car keys and the garage door
opener can remain in the vehicle because
it's useless unless the power is enabled.

You also would want to make sure you have a
newer garage door opener with a beam
sensor.  I would hate for a cat or child to
get caught under the door with no-one home
to open it.  I know they also have a
reversing mechanism when it encounters too
much resistance, but I wouldn’t want to
completely trust that.  The beam provides
extra protection.

Radio shack used to sell a large magnetic
read switch who's purpose was to detect an
open garage door.  It was for use in an alarm
system.

The magnet would mount on top of the door,
and the switch itself just above the mangent
on the wall (when door was closed).  It
suported a gap of 1-2 inches.

I got one, and it's been working great for
over a decade.

On my system, the "open door" detector as
well as the control of the button are
hard-wired (though I do run X10).  Security
is the reason.  If a neighbor stumbles on the
proper HC/Dev, I didn't want weird behavior.
Also, someone could plug in mini controller
to one of your outdoor outlets, and try all
the codes (if they know you're doing X10).

One scheme you might consder, I saw a few
years back was to use two modules.  One
plugged into the other.  That way the first
modules must be on to access the second one
(use different HC/Dev for each).  So to
active the door open/close:

- turn module 1 on
-turn module 2 on
-wait a second
-turn module 2 off
-turn module 1 off.

Also, something you can consider if you can
detect when the door is open (hard wire of
X10), set a timer so that the door will close
after 10-20 minutes.  I first set this up
when I lived in Minnesota and left the garage
open a couple night that we got snow.

Great idea Andy D.

I already have a switch that detects the
gragge door being open.  I've been hesitant
to trust X-10 to control the door. Your
idea is simple and effective, thought I
never occurred to me before.  I'll hook up
my UM-506 today to be able to close (but
not open) the garaged door.

It doesn't hurt to use a couple of in-line
automobile fuses to connect your X10 module
to your opener.  We had a lightning hit a
couple of years back and fried the opener we
had hooked to the universal module (and the
module as well)

Garage Door Security, not perfect but???
I connected the garage door opener to an
appliance module.  The software turns the
module on and off at the approximate times we
would be using the garage door.  We sleep
better at night knowing it will not open even
if they have the appropriate opener.  When we
go away at an unusual time or for vacation
etc we take a remote with us and we easily
can turn on the door.

I use the um506 to control the garage door,
but wire it through the magnetic switch
mounted to the door.  That way, I can close
the door with x10 but cant open it.  The
um506 fires, but since the door is closed
and the switch is open, the opener never
receives the contact closure.  I also have a
unit (cant remember the #) that sends an x10
signal when the garage door switch is opened
or closed, causing a lamp to go on in the
den if the door is open.

I can use AHP to close the door, or a web
page (using the sdk) from the internet or
web enabled cell phone.

Before the sdk queryplc command was broken
in 3.18x, i could even tell from my cell
phone if the door was open or closed.

Its the Powerflash module that I could not
think of that i use to send the x10 signal
ON when the magnetic contacts close and OFF
then they open.

Depends how handy you are.  I have a remote that was dropped and the case is no longer useful.  My first pass was to control a relay with the parallel port of my PC.  This took two resistors and a transistor to drive a relay.  The coil of the relay was also in series with a set of magnetic contacts on the garage door that were closed when the door was open; the sensor was for another function.  The door has the eyes and all the other safety devices still operational and unmodified.  The NO contact of the relay paralleled the NO contact of the remote pushbutton. The result is I change a battery about once a year and the computer will close the door only if it is open.  This could also work in parallel with the standard push button, a very cheep solution.  Remember you do not want the relay contact closed for more then a few seconds.

Good Luck
