AHP CM15A vs PowerLinc 1132CU
« on: April 26, 2005, 05:55:18 PM »

Hi All,

I received and set up my SmartHome 1132CUP
controller today. In all fairness to X10 and
the CM15A I will say this up front.

The SmartHome software does not (apparently)
have a video capture plug in. I tried a
third party, HomeSeer, capture driver and it
did not work with my hardware. The good news
is that HomeSeer offers a 30 day free trial.
I did not lose any money on that test. I
like the AHP GUI better, the big icons make
me feel like I have more control.

It looks like X10 made a smart move with the
VM11A USB capture device. I hate the non-
tweak-ability of that thing but basically it
works.

I have downloaded my macros to the 1132CUP
and will let you all know of the results,
worse, better, or the same as CM15A.

Right now my CM15A is still hooked up but it
is only set to trigger on a motion
detector / camera macro. I 'think' I have
turned off all of the other functions.

Each controller and software for them have
good and bad points. I have a 1132CU but
would welcome seeing your thoughts as I have
not given up 100% yet on my cm15a.

I to am using the 1132CU but I am using
Home Control Assistant.  I don't think it
has a video plugin.  What I do like is the
ability to create an actual floor plan of
my home and place icons that represent the
actual devices they control.  The floor
plan can be in the form of a graphics file
(bmp, jpeg), or in the form of a DXF file,
its pretty slick.  aside from that the 1132
is rock solid.
Thanks,
T.

I will give up my interest in this thread
with the following:

The 1132CU is about twice the price of the
CM15A, the 15A has an 'introductory price'
right now.

Keeping that in mind, I love the tweak-
ability of the 1132CU and the SmartHome
software. Timers, macros, and even things
like being able to change some of the rates
and threshold levels on the controller have
put me in tweakers paradise.

If you have a functional CM15A and do not
need all of the extra gizmos, my advice
would be to not spend the extra money on an
1132CU.

The 1132CU is apparently a Cadillac in the
world of GM sedans. If you can afford one,
fine, but the family car still gets you to
work.

I will be paying about twice the price of
the iWitness video software for video
capture ability with my 1132CU. I have a
good budget and like to experiment so I do
not mind.

The reason I am being so kind to X10 is that
they appear to be working hard to get the
kinks out of this new product.

An 'open forum' is about the hardest thing
you can do to a product line. History shows
that satisfied customers do not complain (or
leave messages of their happiness).

I (with a grin on my face) have done my best
to test the credibilty of this forum. It is
open, and not censored in respect to
criticism.

Good job X10 people (and any bots you may
use).

Ken,
That was a very fair comment to both X10 and
their competitor.  So far, I am doing fairly
well with my CM15A.  I have 20 modules, lots
of macros and timers and only have a couple
of minor issues.  I am open to a competitors
product but I have to agree with you that X10
seems to be working hard to resolve the
issues as best they can with this model. I
bet we will see a huge leap forward in the
next version. I appreciate their willingness
to leave the forum open.  I have not found
many companys willing to offer an almost real
time open forum to discuss their products and
their competitors products. The folks that
are not having trouble, as you pointed out,
are probably not visiting this forum very often.
I keep in mind that the 1132 is always an
option if things go sour but for now all
seems stable with the CM15A that I am running.
regards,
SteveRF

The CM15a RF receiver is made by Himark,
and has an open air range of 300ft, with a
good antenna (external) it’s probably as
good as the V572.
If X10 fixes their hardware issues mainly
processing power(and a battery backup
hardware clock would be nice), even at $100
would be a bargain.
I do not believe is a total loss yet; maybe
if X10 Pro would give us a hint if they
planning( or already working ) on improving
the hardware; could probably make life
easier for many people knowing that there
is light at the end of the tunnel.

Carmine - X10 has essentially stated no
hardware fixes.  They are going the sotware
route.  Think of the problems it would
create to do a hardware change / upgrade.
That would essentialy be like admitting
there was a flaw in the CM15A, and would
force them to offer it free to all who have
purchased CM15A so far.  If they wait until,
say 18 months after product release, then
everyone who purchased product during first
6 months would have an expired warranty.  At
that point, it would be possible, though I
think highly unlikely, for X10 to start
selling a "new and improved" version...

ARF1410

That is the reason I returned, I was afraid
that by the time they fix it(if they fix
it )it would have been not returnable.
I can make do with the 1132CUP and 2 RR501
I already have for now, I am hopeful that
eventually they will do the right thing and
fix the hardware, otherwise as the need
arise I will add the V572AB and camera plug
in to my 1132CUP.

My date code 05C10 has a version 2 Firmware
in it and the receiver antenna is layed out
neatly on the PC board with hot melt glue
and is not in a big knot like earlier ones.

Indigo for a Mac reports the Firmware
version. AHP doesn't give you that data as
far as I can find.  My original reported V1
new one v2.

I've decided to review the 1132cup. Which
website has the best prices on it?

And in my experience, AutomatedOutlet has
been a very responsive/responsible vendor.
