x10 camera range problem
« on: September 05, 2005, 02:59:06 PM »

I've recently purchase a wireless x10 camera
from a local RadioShack. It has an
addressable power supply which also acts as a
wireless traciever and it had a video/audio
reciever with a microphone embedded in the
camera itself.

When I plugged it in, it only seemed to work
in the SAME room. As soon as I brought the
camera away from direct sight of the
receiver, I got snow or no picture at all and
no sound.

From what I read in the forums, you guys have
no problems with your cameras. I need one for
my roof terrace, so the receiver would be on
the middle floor, with the camera being on my
roof. There is a celing between, which is
pretty thick considering that it is a roof.

Does the camera use RF to communicate. Will
an RF extender help me?

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Roman

You may want to go to the X10 Forums in the
cameras area. There maybe more data there.
What is the RS Model Number or do you know
the X10 Model in question? Does the camera
have an antenna on it that can be pointed at
the receivers antenna?

It does have an antenna on it and I always
pointed it towards the receiver's antenna.

I didn't see any X10 brand or cameras that
even looked like an X10 camera on the Radio
Shack site. Any model numbers?
One thing to check. Do you have a 2.4 Ghz
cordless phone or a wirless network? They
are both known to cause problems. If you do
as a test maybe turn the devices off and see
what happens. Also the antennas have a front
and back side. Right now I don't remember if
the dimple is the front or the back. You may
want to double check it isn't facing the
incorrect way. As for the questions: Yes the
cameras use an RF signal in the 2.4 Ghz band
to send the video. The Remotes if you have
them are on 310Mhz and are received by a
tranceiver. It sends the X10 commands over
the power line at 120 Khz. Yes the
addressable power supplies are controled by
powerline signals. All X10 cameras work in
groups of 4. 1-4;5-8;9-12 and 13-16. So if
you have cameras on A1 A2 and A3. An ON
signal for the A2 camera suppply turns off
A1 A3 and A4. An on signal on A4 would turn
off the other three if that was all you had
and you would get snow on the receiver.
