Toggelinc wall switch
« on: November 06, 2005, 11:48:53 AM »

I purchased a TOGGLELINC 2-WAY DIMMER WITH
BOOSTERLINC (23890).  AHP doesn't have this
device loaded in as a optional wall
switch.  I have tried different 2-way
modules that are loaded in AHP, but either
polling or dimming won't work with the
toggelinc.

Do I have any options?

I really like style of toggelinc swicthes
and if I have to change software I guess I
will.

to the best of my knowledge (and experience), the 2-way
features on all the smarthome products are NOT compatible
with AHP

Scott:  The SmartHome brand modules all use
the original (obsolete) PresetDim command,
which X10 never implemented.  The 2-way
modules use the newer extended dim command.
Your best bet is to define 2 modules at the
same address (one 2-way appliance and another
light switch module).  You can use the 2-way
appliance to do the polling and to turn the
module on and off and the light switch module
to dim the module (although since the
smarthome modules have 32 dim levels instead
of 16, they might behave differently).  You
could also use scenes to set the appropriate
brightness.

Help me understand "You  could also use
scenes to set the appropriate brightness"

What I'm trying to do is build sunrise
macro that will slowing turn on the
lights.  I had to buy the 2way switch
because of the "on" then "Dim" command that
is standard in a 1-way.
I have got this to work in a LM14a, but
would like to have better local control.

Scott:  I agree that when it comes to X10
brand modules, the LM14a (2-way) module is
your only option.  None of SmartHome’s
modules have this “On” then “Dim” limitation.
Even SmartHome’s “Econo” lamp module will
let you ramp up from off.

Having said that, to do a “sunrise” you are
best off with a SmartHome “Plus,” “2-way” or
“Insteon” module or switch since you can
program “scenes” in them.  You don’t even
need to write a macro.  All you have to do is
create a scene that will turn the module on
to the desired brightness with a slow fade
rate (up to 9 minutes).  That way when you
turn that scene address on, it will gradually
turn the light on over the desired amount of
time.

To program scenes you need to be able to send
X10 addresses without a command.  This
feature doesn’t work yet in the AHP software,
but you can use the SDK’s command line
interface to send the required addresses.
You can even write a batch file to send them
automatically.  Fortunately you will only
need to do this once.  If you need help with
this, let me know.

I have two suggestions for you.  I setup a
sunrise macro about a year ago and I love it.
I have it synched with my morning alarm
(snooze) and HVAC.  The temperature in the
house rises, the lights fade up, and a nice
song wakes me in the morning.  I used a
simple lamp module to do it but, I have
plenty of togglelinc's in the house.  I use
AHP to send an "on" command at 20% dimmness,
then every 14 minutes I increase the dimness
by 20% with the last increment being 40%,
20-40-60-100.

Suggestion 1:  I understand your statement to
say that your toggelinc doesn't dim at all.
If this is the case, make sure your toggelinc
is installed correctly.  I noticed when I
installed the togglelinc's that they require
the neutral wire to be connected.  To wire
the switch don't go buy the colors of the
wires.  Actually test the voltage and be sure
to find the line and the load, and attach the
appropriate wires in the appropriate position.

Suggestion 2:  If the problem is not with the
dimming, but rather, with the 2-way polling
identifying the dim level, I think you're out
of luck.  Using a togglelinc, AHP can only
detect a full on or full off.  In other
words, if you turn on a light using the
togglelinc, then AHP will recognize it.  But,
if you then dim the light, it will remain at
100% in AHP.  If you dim-on a light using the
togglelinc, then AHP will not recognize it
and remain at 0%.  In this case, if you don't
want the sunrise to occur if you've already
turned on the lights, then be sure to turn
the lights on fully using the switch (i.e.
don't dim-up from the switch).  The rest
should be cake.  Pick a time for "sunrise",
set the macro (in a way similar to what I
described above), and off you go.

Good Luck!
