Wall Switches
« on: December 22, 2005, 11:26:14 PM »

Does any company make NON-dimmable
replacement wall switches? I'd like to put
an x10 wall switch in my kitchen, but the
kitchen light is also part of a ceiling fan.
Socket Rockets would not look very good with
my particular light/fan, and I would much
rather use a wall switch. Thanks!

Look at the Decorator type WS13A or the
X10Pro XPS3. Note both type use a neutral
wire in the switch box. So there needs to be
a hot/live; neutral and the load wire in the
switch box.

Bart:  There are several options available.
The WS13A that Brian suggested is one good
one.  An better option might be the SmartHome
ICON On Off Switch (p/n 2876SB).  This switch
uses Insteon technology, which is both
forwards and backwards compatible with X10.
It also has a true rocker action (tap the top
to turn it on and the bottom to turn it off).
To top it off, it is cheaper than the WS13A.

If you want to control the light and fan
separately, you could use two in-line modules
(the X10Pro XPFM for the fan and either the
XPFM or the XPDF for the light).  You could
then replace the switch with some type of
keypad (the SmartHome KeypadLincs are nice).
You probably wouldn’t be able to fit both
in-line modules in one box though, so this
option would probably only work if the light
and fan use separate boxes although you might
be able to replace the box with deep box to
get it to work.  I am surprised no-one has
developed a light/fan in-line module which
will control both a light and a fan separately.

All of these modules are available from
Automated Outlet
(http://www.automatedoutlet.com), who I find,
tend to have the best prices and provide good
service.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the
ICON On Off Switch will require a neutral
wire in the switch box.  If you don't have a
neutral wire, you can use an in-line module
at the fixture and then re-wire the switch so
that you can use some type of transmitter to
control the module.

The ICONs are also nice. Ther specfications
between the web and my actual units are not
jiving. Web says dimmer 300 watts and relay
type 10 amps. Mine 600 watts dimmer and 13
amps relay. Also I added an X10 secne while
the web said none.

Brian:  Interesting!  It sounds like they
sent you a full Insteon switch instead of
an ICON switch.  Lets hope that someone who
ordered an Insteon switch didn't receive an
ICON switch instead ;).

Mine plainly says ICON on it and it has the
single Green LED. I think they may have used
the basic boards from the full ones and just
changed the leds and maybe the firmware. In
the future in theory they never said it
would be as haevy duty as the originals.
Letting them change the relay and triac at
will. Also though they said no X10 Scenes I
added one to mine?
