x10nets.exe?
« on: January 23, 2006, 10:27:02 PM »

Anyone know what the process x10nets.exe is
that I have running and taking up 4800K of
memory?  I dont recall seeing this before
installing AHP and given the name.... it
looks x10.  I cant kill it and dont see it
in any startup.
What does it do and how do I remove it?  I
dont need my memory hogged up with useless
stuff, if AHP is not even running.
Thanks!

What I've discovered, is it's something AHP
puts there. All it does is open "X10 Skins",
but that's all it does. You have to kill it
by opening the Task Manager and shutting it
off there. AHP does not appear to invoke it.
Perhaps X10 Pro would like to shed some light
on it?

X10nets runs the X10 Device Network Service
-- visible from the Services panel in
Windows. The X10 service handles
communication with all X10 hardware, and also
processes timers and macros that are run from
the PC. This allows you to have timers and
macros run from the PC without actually
having AHP running. Since the service also
tracks incoming data from devices, it also
allows X10 activity to be recorded when AHP
is not running.

If you want to run timers or macros from the
PC, you need to have this service installed
and working.

You don't have to run the X10 device
components as service, but they will be
started every time AHP runs if they're not.

Thanks, X10 Pro.

I don't believe that's covered in the booklet
that comes with AHP, but I'll have to look.
If it's not, perhaps it should be. Since my
timers run from the 15, I don't have any
housed on the PC, (whuch usually is up 24/7,
but sometimes is shut down from midnight to 7
AM.) and don't expect any, but that might change.

Thanks x10 pro, I think I will leave this
service as manual startup, since I dont need
my PC to run the macros.
Any other programs running in the background?

Is there a reason that x10nets.exe needs to run with realtime priority? It visibly slows down my computer (P4, 3 GHz, 512 MB RAM) when it's running at realtime priority.

Task manager does not allow me to change its priority. It does allow me to kill the process and, of course, I can manage it via Services.

I wouldn't mind leaving x10nets.exe running if it would play nicer and run with normal priority. As it is, I leave it as a Manual service and kill it after I exit AHP.

If you want to run timers or macros from the
PC, you need to have this service installed
and working.

It is also needed to communicate with most other X10 hardware (the CM17 and CM19 for sure)

I don't believe that's covered in the booklet

Your correct, it isn't in the booklet.  The only source of information about X10nets.exe from X10 is this forum.

Either that, or put it in the FAQ.

Thanks x10 pro, I think I will leave this
service as manual startup, since I dont need
my PC to run the macros.

It would be nice if there was an option in AHP to automatically stop the service after closing AHP (and switch the service to manual of course).  Those of us who keep the CM15A disconnected, certainly don't need to have it running all the time.  This option should also be added to other X10 S/W (such as the firecracker interface).

Not to my knowledge.

I haven't been able to get a system here to show it running with real time priority. We aren't setting it that way when we register the service. If you look in Services is there anything different about the X10 Device Network Service?

No, it looks like an ordinary service. But when I start the service (either automatically or letting AHP start it), X10nets.exe always runs at Realtime priority. ActiveHm.exe also runs at Realtime. See attached screen capture.

System:
HP Pavilion a450n
Pentium 4 @ 3 GHz
512 MB RAM
150 GB disk
Windows XP Home SP2

This has been happening for several versions of AHP. I've been hoping it would be noticed and fixed. But it's only me???

I don't know if it's only you, but I haven't heard this problem from other users, and haven't seen it here. Have you ever set the process priority for any of these manually? If you right click on the X10 processes and use the "Set Priorty.." function to set them to "Normal", does that selection stay after re-boot?

I cannot change x10nets.exe's priority through Task Manager at all. When I try, I get a dialog "Unable to change priority. The operation could not be completed. Access is denied." Very strange.

I can change ActiveHm.exe's priority, but it doesn't stick; any subsequent invocation runs at Realtime.

This is as the only user ("Owner") on this computer, with administrative rights.

Should I try to uninstall/reinstall? Can I do that without losing my software license?

I don't have any system problems with X10Nets.exe running.  Your task manager has much too much extraneous programs running in the background. My Task Manager has less, and winword and Outlook use more resorces than X10Nets.exe ever does.

I would suggest you review everything you show in your Task Manager to see if you reallly need all those programs running.

BTW, Task Manager pulls more resources than X10Nets. exe.

I decided to check this out and on my home PC (2.8 GHz P4, 512MB RAM, XP Home) the x10nets.exe service is running with normal priority (I didn't check the priority of the AHP software).

However, I have the SDK installed on my PC at work (3 GHz P4, 1GB RAM, XP Pro) and on it the x10nets.exe service is running with realtime priority.  Similar to Bob, I cannot change the priority (I do have administrative rights but am not logged in as the "local" administrator).  I am able to change the "Startup Type" to Disabled (I never have a CM15A connected to it).

After reading this post, I checked my computer and x10nets.exe is set for realtime.  I am unable to change it to normal priority.  I disabled the cm15a and restarted and it still shows up as realtime priority, and I can not change it normal.  I think we all have items running on our system which we do not know why they are taking up space.  Yet, to have program taking up space when it should not is troublesome is bad programming, which is the major problem with AHP.
