I too was disappointed with the quality of
the video.  I was thinking the quality I
observed was the best the cameras could
deliver until I connected one of my cameras
directly to a TV set.  This demonstrated
that the camera output wasn't all that bad.
The degradation aperantly takes place in
the conversion to digital video in the
computer interface (VA11A) or the softward
that does the conversion.

I've got my sytem set to deliver the
highest quality the controls will allow.
While you can see people in the area the
camera covers, you'd find it challenging to
identify them from the video.

One reason that the picture quality is so
different between your TV and the computer
is that your computer has a higher pixel
resolution than what your tv does. The
VA11A has to tanslate a lower resolution to
a higher resolution and as such it doesn't
look the best. A new Vidcard won't help you
out - unless you wanted a lighter wallet.

The Xcam’s 310 TV Line resolution as
compared to a human's eyesight would make
the human "legally blind".  If you want
crisp features etc?  Not for $40 bucks, you
need 480 TV Line resolution or better and
that is about a factor of 10 in cost.  You
have an inexpensive toy, so enjoy.  Mud
flaps and stars won't make it better. :-]

I have the same quality issue with
iwhitness.  Try using the free software
XrayVision and you will see a big
difference.  I like that program much
better for looking at video and it's free
from x10!

kidder: Are you talking about the live video
displayed on the screen, or recorded video?

You can improve the quality of recorded video
by improving the resolution or framerate
settings in the video preferences. This will
give you a better, smoother picture, but will
use more hard drive space when you record.

If the live video display isn't very good,
try making the display image smaller. If the
video window is bigger than the native video
size, the image loses a little clarity when
it is re-sized.

Jim, Others,
I am thinking of expanding my CM15A/AHP/Macro
system and including some video.  I DO want a
decent picture.. I DON'T want to have to
GUESS who is in the picture.  I'd like to be
able to go to TV or PC or both.... I am now
starting to read the iWitness threads. My
first impressions are not so good but I will
continue to look.  I want to monitor a
portion of my yard and our deck/pool area.  I
would appreciate all candid, objective
thoughts.  What is good, bad etc... and your
personal thoughts would be really appreciated
before I commit and end up disappointed.
Regards,
SteveRF
