NEW VA11A /DRIVER/Image Quality Questions
« on: September 25, 2005, 01:56:31 PM »

X10PRO...Marc, Others,
I have a new VA11A s/n 05H34
It was a disaster to install the driver. The
X10Drivers.exe would never install properly.
Had the ole Intel Cam stuff and DID follow
instructions on page 14..no good here.
I finally used XStreams.exe and got a running
VA11A driver BUT....
---------------------------------------------
The "PC" picture is AWFUL !  TERRIBLE
The TV pic with the 31A is good, with the 36A
it is just "ok"  I get the same AWFUL pic on
the pC with either Receiver.
The Va11a driver specs are:
From: X10
Date:3/19/2001
Ver 2.0.0.55
-------------------------------------------
Is this Correct ?  Seems a bit OLD !
Any assistance appreciated... the iWitness
setup is pretty useless without a good pic...
Oh yes.,..I shut down most everything in the
house to make sure it was not interference...
"However", it does look like
interference..terrible squiggly lines all
over the PC pic...

Looking forward to responses.
Regards,
SteveRF

There are many things which can cause poor
reception since it is 2 GHZ RF. cordless
phones, wireless lans, microwaves, metal
stud work in the walls. I find viewing the
pic in iwitness  the quality is very poor
however I use the autostills capture and
viewing the captured pic is of far better
quality. Have you played with the video
settings Resoltion/Quality/FrameRate in
preferences to see if you can improve them
any from there?

Tuicemen,
Once again you came through !
After tinkering a bit with the "VERY POOR" pc
reception, I looked at your suggested
settings and found the FPS settings , size
and pic quality etc set way too low.  I moved
the FPS to 24, resolution to 640x480, Quality
to the MAX setting and viola...all 3 cams now
show a pretty good live pic live.  The
squiggly lines ( and there were so many that
I could not make out much detail) all but
went away. The color and B&W cams all are
reporting pretty darn good pics on the
iWitness screen now !
Now I can see what I can do with iWitness.
I hope X10 gets the internet plugin designed
in a fashion that will allow us to view
remotely with as much resolution as I have
now.  I am , once again, happy with it.
Thanks Again for your time !

btw, I saw your log cabin/off grid set
up...looks really nice. Quite an
accomplishment. It makes me want to move and
do the same thing right across the lake !

Thanks SteveRF
The off grid log home has been my summer
projects  (not a kit).
Nice to hear you have Iwitness working the
way you like you'll find I suspect that your
saved pics will look even better (mine do)!
As for the internet plugin pics DO look as
good! :)

I'm curious about the difference in the
XStreams driver vrs the VA11 driver.  I
went through the Intel stage of set-up and
then updated the driver and my Hardware
Manager shows the VA11 under the USB
interface section as:
X10 Wireless Technology, Inc
Driver Date: 2/16/05
Driver Version: 3.0.0.180

Bad news is, I still can't get iWitness to
recognize any cameras.  Tonight I'll have
to climb under the desk and check the
number on the VA11 and match it against
the "bad" ones listed in other threads.

DIYguy,
I could not get the normal va11 driver to
install.  I always ended up with the Intel
camera and my iWitness would not use it.  The
xStreams installed the driver with no problem
and everything works as expected.
As you can see from my first post, the diver
I have at this moment has a 2001 date.  I
think this is really old and am wondering if
new/better  valla drivers are here somewhere ?
Also I did not quite a quality difference in
the VR36A and the VR31A vid receivers.  The
31A gave a much better pic on the PC and on
the TV after fiddling with both for quite
some time.

Well....got home, crawled behind the
computer and checked which VA11a was hooked
up.  Number on this one is 04D16 although I
also have a 05H34 still in the box.  It
seems the 05E19 has been mentioned as
defective unless more than one series
is "belly-up".

Another interesting note...I hooked up the
camera and receiver in my office at home to
test the units again.  AHP/iWitness boots
up and still gives the "no video capture
device present" message.  Still no
connection to camera.  When I tried to go
online to check numbers, etc, no network or
internet connection.  I'm on Lynksys
wirless network and broadband, so went
throught the down and reboot process twice
for full system, modem, router, computers.
Still no connection.  Realized the camera
was still plugged in so unpluged the camera
and shut off the receiver.  Presto, network
is back.  Plugged in the camera and turned
on the receiver and presto...network is
off.  Looks like these cameras are waging
2.4 war.  Bad news is my check book is
caught in the middle of all this
warfair.  "Oh....that one didn't work, you
need the (fill in the blank) to make that
work and it's on sale for only $$$$$$$$$$$".

DIYGuy,
My VA11A is 05H34 and seems to work well
although I have not fired up my wireless in a
week or so.  You may be interested in my
problem with a Vid capture card and the
CM15A/X10 Cams etc postd in the general
section today.  I have great pics now and the
VR31A is still giving pretty good pics with
the VA11A.  I still have that old driver running.
