AHP will not start...only wants to report trouble to MicroSoft
« on: December 28, 2004, 06:51:07 PM »

I've tried reinstalling the
ahpupdt_175.exe, but nothing. When I run
the install, it's not finding rundll32 in
common files. What now?

This applies to Windows XP. You will have
to make appropriate directory changes for
your setup/Windows version. Do a search
from windows for the rundll file. If you
find a copy in the common directory

This applies to Windows XP. Delete the
ocurrance of RUNDLL in the common
directory. Edit The desktop shortcut for
AHP - Change the reference in TARGET to
make the call to the rundll32.exe in the
Windows/system directory. Note: when you
make this change you will get an error when
AHP is upgraded due to the hard coding of
the directory in the call to rundll.exe but
you can ignore the error.

I have asked for the change from X10. I
believe that X10's inclusion of an OLDER
version of RUNDLL.EXE onto a newer version
of Windows may cause OS stability problems.
Which in turn will cause problems with AHP.

Forgot to add DELETE any copies of
rundll.exe in the X10/ActiveHome Pro
directories. This will prevent possible
problems.

X10 - Any calls to rundll should use the
version appropriate to the operating
system, this might complicate your coding
but will contribute to the overall
stability of the program and the OS as you
are using the version that was created for
that version of Windows.

Are you using XP, 98, ME, or 2K?

Also, note that for Windows 2K and XP,
rundll32 isn't used.  Activehm.exe launchs
the application, and x10nets.exe is the
service executable for the driver.

Hmmm...  I was getting nothing but rundll32.
exe crashes whenever I started AHP 3.175 on
my Win XP SP1 system.

I tried the hint from Donald McMow: I renamed
rundll32.exe in the common directory and
replaced it with a copy of rundll32.exe from
C:\windows\system32.  Now AHP 3.175 runs
without crashing.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it doesn't work.
X10 on Windows is like that.

Ok, Still nothing but an error and an offer
to contact MS. I'm a bit confused by the
referance to a call to the rundll32 in the
shortcut....here's the target text

"C:\Program Files\ActiveHome
Pro\ActiveHm.exe"

and it is set to start in the

C:\PROGRA~1\ACTIVE~1

directory. I copied an "official" MS
version of the rundll32 to the x10\common
directory, replacing the one that was there.

I still cannot run AHP, and get the

ctive Home Professional has encountered a
problem and needs to close.  We are sorry
for the inconvenience.

message....

Arrrgggghhh...It would be more rewarding if
I were writing my own software...but this
is really bugging me...since I paid for
it...

Phil: Can you right-click on the icon you're
clicking on and choose "Properties" from the
menu that pops up? What is the "Target"
listed in the shortcut details?

Everything was working fine for a couple of months. The other morning I went to start AHP and got a windows pop-up box:
"Error getting X10nets interface"
AHP did NOT start and I have not been able to use AHP since. I tried unplugging, removing batteries, etc.  I hear a ding when reconnecting the USB cable and see the X10 device in my hardware list and it says it is running fine.  But still can't get AHP to run or even show a splash screen.

I am running XPSP2.  X10nets.exe shows version 1.0.0.1  and X10net.dll is version3.0.0.204 if that helps.

How do I get AHP to run again???
Thanks
