Functionality of RF part of CM15
« on: February 11, 2005, 03:36:04 AM »

I have just placed some lights on an LM465
lamp module and can't figure out why it
works with the rf remote but not from ahp.
I noticed it when the lights were not
turning on with the timer.  I tried to
manually turn them on with ahp and there
was no response.  I can use the remote all
day long and it works every time.  I can
see all the signals in the activity monitor
from both sources but only the rf seems to
work.  I have since created a macro to send
an rf signal and that works.  Any ideas as
to why this is happening would be
appreciated.

If you are new to X-10, the most likely issue
is that you need a phase coupler/repeater.
Almost all homes do.  If you move your
interface to a different wall plug - does it
suddenly work?  If so....that's likely what
is being indicated.

Also, if your interface is plugged into a
circuit that shares a UPS or other X-10
signal absorber - that could also explain it.

Lyle - Do you have another X10 controller
in your house? If so please unplug it as a
test and use your remote - are the lights
still controlled. Most people using the
CM15A have issues with the RF not having
enough range. If this is the case then you
have an issue with the phases in your house
and will need a coupler to bridge both
phases. I would imagine that if the CM15A
is the only controller then you might want
to request a replacement unit as it could
be defective. Try moving the CM15A to other
outlets and see what happens - if it
sudden;y works then the problem is again
with the phases - if not then it is the
interface. Try to make sure that the plugin
is on the same side as the light switch.
Note: you could also be dealing with a line
noise issue as well but I doubt it as you
can use a remote to control the lights -
usually if you are having problems
controlling lights then it affects both the
remotes and the powerline sections of the
interface.

Joe S - Lyle doesn't appear to have any
problems with the RF section of the CM15A
since he stated that the lights can be
controlled with a remote - this would
indicate that there is a problem with the
cm15a itself transmitting commands on to
the powerline - rather than the translation
of RF commands to the powerline commands.

I hit submit before reading things through
and should clarify earlier comments. If you
can't control the lights with the remote
(with the other transceiver not plugged in)
and you have moved the interface around
then you have problems with the interface
and should request a replacement. If you
still can control the lights with a remote
AND not from a regular (NO RF commands)
macro then there is a problem with your
CM15A. Again request a replacement. But do
try to move the CM15A to other plugins and
try a regular macro (no RF commands) and
see what happens.

Lyle: Do you have another transceiver in use?
A TM751, RR501, or X10 security system
console? That might explain why remotes work
but control from the software doesn't.

Thanks Joe and Donald.  You guys are good.
Yes I have another transceiver in use.
Sure enough, when I unplug the transceiver
my remote stops working.  My guess is that
the transceiver is on the other phase and
that a phase coupler should correct my
problem.
And yes, I'm new to this but learning
fast.

Thanks again.
