Quality & recommendations for outdoor night cameras
« on: August 06, 2005, 09:07:42 AM »

Hi all, I am looking for a few cameras for
use outside to keep an eye on the
house...I'd like something that was motion
activated, or at least goes to a VCR on a
long tape if possible....I'm not hearing
good reviews here...is this stuff junk?

I use the floodlight with cam hooked to my
VCR using VCR Commander. Cam is activated
at all times day or night and at night the
floods come on with cam. It records  and
then the VCR commander stops recording
after 5 minutes. Don't need long tape.

The Floodcam is good, but consider that it
is not available in the wide-angle, so the
field of view is narrow.  Also, there is no
microphone in it so it will not record
audio (I've been asking for this for years
from X-10).

You can set up any camera to be motion
activated and recordable with a motion
detector and VCR commander.

If you want to record in low light, I would
recommend the Nightwatch camera, which only
records in Black & White but great for
night time.  It requires a little light (it
is not infra-red) so set up a light with
the same unit # as the camera and it will
go on with the same motion that starts the
camera and recording.

A simple, and very cost effective way of
night time security is to replace the
outside light switch with an X-10 wall
switch, and then put a motion detector
outside.  As soon as someone walks into
that area, the light comes on.  We have
that set up at every door.

If you want additional security, set up a
camera in the same area with the same unit
# as the light.  The camera will always be
activated with motion, but the light will
come on only at night.  This must be
programmed into the motion detector using
the instructions included.
