FloodLight/Camera Combo, recording question
« on: June 13, 2004, 11:02:05 PM »

Hi guys,

I am interested in this package
http://www.x10.com/cgi-bin/viewparts.cgi?
VT38A-SP-2CWY-FB99-UP40

This is really nice when I am sitting in
front of the TV watching the screen while
someone come to my front door.  But what
about the times when I am not at home and a
burglar tries to break in?

From my understanding, the way it works is
that whenever the unit detects motion, it
will automatically turn on the camera and
record.  I am wondering if it is possible
to set it up so that when it detects
motion, it will automatically tell a
recording device (VCR? computer) to record
the motion as well?

thanks

The VCR Commander 2 will tell your VCR to
record when motion takes place.  So it won't
fill up your tape unless there is activity.
You can do a search on their site to find
more info or you can copy this link.

I am using four flood cams and a VCR
Commander II hooked to an old vcr that
doesn't play well, but, records
wonderfully.  I have had no problems with
the VCR Cmdr 2 turning my vcr on and off
when one of the cameras picks up motion.
The only problem I have had is when two
cameras are triggered at nearly the same
time, both cameras try and record so you
get not much of anything on tape and the
VCR Cmdr II takes a second or two to start
the recorder so if your front door is in an
alcove like mine, it is possible for the
thing to kick on the vcr AFTER whoever was
at your door has come and gone, like the
mailman dropping off a package...all I
usually get of him is his back or his one
foot as he rounds the corner heading out.

My floodcam is mounted on my garage 30'
away from my vcr commander II. The RF
signal will not reach my commander. I had
to install a eagle eye outside by the
floodcam to trigger my commander. The
floodcam works on the vcr commander, if I
bring it inside. So much for 100' range
from the vcr commander.

As for the computer recording from the
floodcam, I've had no problem with it saving
pics on the setting 'Always save images'. On
that setting though you end up with a bunch
of useless pics filling up your hardrive.
I've had no success with the motion only
setting. The following is part of email I
sent x10 2 days; still no reply.

-------
Trying to get MultiView to work on the
setting 'Only save images when motion is
detected' with floodcam.

Phone rep said not receiving signal
because of brick wall. I said why is it that
I'm getting saved pictures when MultiView is
set to 'Always save images' and I'm
receiving live video . He said it's
different frequencies. He suggested using
speaker wire to extend the transceiver.

I had a better idea. I hooked up a
floodcam right here in the same room; less
than 10' from the transceiver. Still no
success with the setting 'Only save images
when motion is detected'.
-------

Anybody have any advice?

Toby,
I have problem receiving from floodcam to
vcr only about 40 feet away outside brick
wall.  How did the rep say you could extend
to move transceiver closer to floodcam.
Also in south and it seems the floodcam does
not transmit when temp above 85-90,  works
better at night 70-75, anyone have any
suggestions.
