Modify Flood Cam mounting

The house I've contracted to have built has specs for flood
lights to be placed under the eaves rather than on the wall
of the house. Is there a way to modify the flood cam so it
can be mounted on the eave and have a good surveillance
view?

I replaced my under-eave floodlights with
FloodCams.   The FloodCam is a good concept
but needs some improvements.  It’s hard to
believe the X10 flood cam does not have an
adjustable mount.  Even after you get them
mounted it is hard to aim at the position
you want to view with no adjustments.

For what it’s worth here are some of the
ideas that I used:
My electrical boxes were flush, I found a
box extender at Ace #3014610 and mounted it
to my original box this provided mounting
holes for the camera and lights but no
adjustment to aim the camera at doors, etc.
To be able to adjust the camera I combined
the removable adjustable part from two
different flood light holders, one from
Lowe’s #14330BR and one from True Value
357274,  (will have some unused parts).
Flood light holder mounts usually have a
male & female side attached with a screw for
adjustment, so these two parts from
different manufactures worked well
together.  I could not find anything that
would provide an adjustable male to female
bracket is the reason for next step.   To
fasten the Camera’s male fitting to the male
bracket assembled from the flood light parts
above use a 1/2” threaded conduit sleeve
(1/2” pipe did not work), I cut the sleeves
in half just to make shorter and also one
will make connector for two different
cameras.  Use care threading the wires
through the bracket not to stress the wires
from the camera.

Hope this helps,
AL

Try using an electrical conduit eldow joint.
You will find this hardware at Home Depot
(about $0.35 a piece). They come in two
sizes (1/2 and 3/4 inch, I think). Take the
base with you. The base and flood lights are
standard electrical components. The elblow
will be male to female. This works well
because you can adjust the cam component
left and right pending the placement of your
flood lights. if you have more questions
post you email and I will send you some
pics...

I installed a floodcam and everything worked
as described in your website and
instructions but I am dissapointed by the
quality of the picture.  I tested it during
daylight and nighttime.  It is definitely
not as sharp as the picture of the lady
being surprised by floodcam.  I did unplug
all wireless phones as suggested and there
was no improvement.  I did notice the lens
is covered by a clear plastic enclosure?
Also, is the range of 20 ft for the camera
or the sensor?

If there is nothing you can recommend to
improve the picture I will request an RMA#.
Would any of your other cameras have a
better picture?

The FloodCam motion sensor does not send
any RF signal.  When it senses motion, it
triggers the unit to turn ON the lights.
But it can send signal via powerline to
activate another X10 unit set by the
FloodCam console unit.  The FloodCam will
not work or activate with the VCR Commander
II.

CT, I have installed 5 of the floodcams in
two different homes.  One with the original
VCR commander and one with commander II.
Both did recieve the signal from the
floodcams when the signals from those cams
are programmed into the commander and it is
within range.  I don't know the exact range
of the cam and the commander, but in the
most range I've had is about 25-30 feet.

Can the Floodcam be "soft-wired" onto a
power cord and standard plug-in connector so
that the unit can be plugged directly into a
standard wall outlet (rather than being
directly hard-wired into the house wiring
system?) Please advise if you have any
information about this.

I have no idea why you would want to do
that, but yes, it can be done.  I usually
push the wires into an extension cord (over
a glass surface for safety) to test them
before installing.  Just be sure to tape
off one of the wire that would be connected
to the lamp sockets.  I think it's the blue
one.
